Southern, Grambling set for showdown

Southern will have two cogs available for this weekend’s key Western Division series with Grambling.

Third baseman and leadoff hitter Romey Bracey, as he has all week, said he’s going to play, and SU coach Roger Cador is going to give him a try.

And pitcher Jarrett Maloy, who hasn’t been sharp in his last two outings, looked good enough in a bullpen session Wednesday to pass Cador’s muster and keep his place in the rotation.

Southern (21-13, 13-5 Western Division) hosts Grambling (17-19, 14-7) in a doubleheader of seven-inning games, beginning at noon today, at Lee-Hines Field.

The first game will be televised on Cox Sports Television (Cable Ch. 37).

Notes

As has been recent tradition, Grambling and Southern will wear retro uniforms honoring the Negro Leagues for the three-game series. … Members of the fourth and fifth grades at Progress Elementary will throw out the first pitch in today’s first game. The students had studied the Negro Leagues during Black History month  … Sunday’s game will be televised on KPBN (Cox Cable Channel 113).

Thumb Up

It's all about getting both your/our current - and FUTURE - customers BACK to becoming fully "engaged" in/to the HBCU Sports / College Experience! Wink

Would be a nice initiative for ALL our HBCU's to possibly consider pursuing next season!

SU splits two with Grambling

TRAVIS SPRADLING/The Advocate

Saturday, for Southern, was about answering.

After Grambling’s Mario Jefferson pitched a first-game gem, blanking SU 5-0, the Jaguars had to answer, and did so, 11-9, in a second game that ebbed and flowed at Lee-Hines Field.

When Grambling took the lead, SU’s bats had a reply both times. And when Grambling made the game close again with a five-run sixth, closer Cody Elliott stood tall, with two strikeouts in a shutout seventh.

“That’s really what it’s about: answering challenges,” Southern coach Roger Cador said. “We did that (Saturday). We’ve just got to keep doing it. I told those kids this team would be difficult, and they proved that today.”

Southern (22-14, 14-6 Western Division) and Grambling (18-19, 15-8) meet in the series finale — a single, nine-inning game — at noon today. The game will be televised on KPBN (Cox Cable Ch. 113).

Gavion, Brooks power Southern

JOHN OUBRE/The Advocate
Southern pitcher Sherrard Brooks held Grambling to just three hits over five innings to earn the win Sunday at Lee-Hines Field.

Sunday was all about how Southern started.

Michael Gavion’s hustle negated the loss of Romey Bracey, and pitcher Sherrard Brooks had yet another strong outing as Southern walloped Grambling, 21-9, in a Western Division showdown game at Lee-Hines Field.

Hitting at the top of the order for Bracey, who missed his fourth straight game with a wrist injury, Gavion went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs. Most important: Gavion beat out the throw on two infield hits in the first and third innings to ignite two-run and nine-run outbursts.

Meanwhile, Brooks (5-1) won his third straight divisional game since entering the weekend rotation. The Jaguars have scored 12, 17 and 21 runs in those three wins.

With Gavion getting the offense going and Brooks dominant, SU led 14-0 through four innings. He left after giving up two runs in the fifth.

SU led 18-3 through six innings before a rain delay of just more than an hour and 21-3 through seven innings.
