Three More Bowl Games Could Be Added
The NCAA News April 28, 2008 The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee will hear proposals by representatives from Washington, D.C.; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Salt Lake City about adding three more bowl games to the 2008 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision calendar. If approved at the committee meeting April 29-May 1 in Weston, Florida, it would bring the number of Division I FBS postseason games to 35. Teams must win at least six games against Division I competition to be eligible to compete in a bowl. Over the last few seasons, the number of bowl-eligible teams has hovered between 71 and 73. The proposed game in Washington, D.C. would be called the Congressional Bowl and would match a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference against Army or Navy. The proposed St. Petersburg Bowl would pit a Conference USA team against a Big East Conference representative, and the Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City would have a Mountain West Conference team against a member of the Western Athletic Conference. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Just Remember... By guaranteeing another rung of watered down teams from C-USA & the Big East a bowl bid, essentially the St. Pete. Bowl all but guarantees that at a minimum USF will at least play UCF in a Bowl Game every year - no matter how sorry BOTH of them may be ... without having to travel too far to do it!!

NCAA Approves Bowl foThursday, May 1, 2008; Page E02
A college football bowl game to be played in Washington was approved by the NCAA yesterday at its meetings in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Congressional Bowl will take place Dec. 20 and likely will pit Navy against an ACC team. The site -- either RFK Stadium or Nationals Park -- will be determined within the next week or two, according to Sean Metcalf and Marie Rudolph of the Washington, D.C. Bowl Committee. It will be the first college football bowl game to be held in the District. Metcalf and Rudolph began work on the Congressional Bowl 17 months ago. They were joined in Florida yesterday by Bob Sweeney of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Bill Hanbury of Destination DC, financial consultant Gene Metcalf and John Reid, the executive director of the Holiday Bowl in San Diego from 1980 to 2000 who served as the group's mentor. "Everyone did their part," Rudolph said. "I'm not entirely sure it's sunk in yet. I don't think it will until we get the official letter from the NCAA. . . . There's an old saying that I'm probably going to butcher, but it goes something like, 'Never underestimate what two committed people can make happen.' " The Congressional Bowl will have to reapply to maintain its status for 2009, but Rudolph and Sean Metcalf said the application process is required of every bowl game. They added that Army has agreed to play in the 2009 game, and they hope to have a service academy take part in the game each year. "I think when the Rose Bowl reapplies it's a little more pro forma," Rudolph said. "For non-BCS bowls, as long as we're doing our job and the participating schools are happy and the student-athletes are happy, it will not be difficult." Teams must win at least six games to be eligible for a bowl game. Should Navy win at least six, it would face an ACC opponent if the conference has nine bowl-eligible teams. (The Congressional Bowl likely would get the ninth ACC team.) Bowl organizers said they are investigating alternatives if the ACC does not have the requisite number of eligible teams. The bowl committee's day began by making a pitch to an NCAA panel of about 20 members, most of them athletic directors and conference commissioners, at 8:30 a.m. Their pitch, and the subsequent questions, took about 30 minutes. They then went back for another round of questions in the afternoon. When asked if he was nervous, Metcalf had an immediate answer. "Yes, how could you not be?" he said. "There was so much riding on this. But because of all the help we got, this really took on a new life. And that's when the nerves kicked in a little bit. But we are very happy that Washington, D.C., is now included among those places that have a bowl game." -- Christian Swezey r Washington _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Some people see things as they are and ask why. Look for the A&T to schedule more 1-AA games to get nine bowl teams in

"Why do I see this DC game erupting into nothing more than an annual rivalry between Navy & Vanderbilt?"

My badd ... Typing too quick for my own good. With the Papa Johns Bowl now moving in an SEC squad, Vandy - & MS State - will be fighting annually to get that trip to B'Ham.
But ... That's along the lines of what kinda bland @ss game you're gonna get ... which woulda probably had someone like FSU or Miami in it if it were held this year. I just envision seeing a lot of Cincy, Syracuse, or Pitt playing UTEP, Marshall, or Tulsa around here in the future ... ... At least until they knock the Trop down! This message has been edited. no question it'll be too cold up here that time of year, unless we're lucky to get an indian summer day in december. don't make sense to me. plus, they're playing the game in the new baseball stadium with rfk as an alternative. who in the heck wants to play a freezing bowl game in beat up rfk stadium? I thought charlotte was too cold a climate for a bowl game but you really have to be desperate to play a bowl game in dc during december… _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ oleschoolaggie, coming to an hbcu near you... |

Guys, I just thought about something else.............................
Since the BCS folks instituted that National Championship Game a couple of years or so ago, does it REALLY matter how many additional bowls the NCAA sanctions? Aside from the 4 BCS and NCG, the rest of these are pretty much "clown" bowls anyway, aren't they? I guess you could make an argument for those non-BCS bowls scheduled on or about New Year's Day, but y'all get the point. So, hey, why not............do something similar to what happens in Div. I basketball, give damn near EVERY friggin school a shot at a bowl game. Who cares? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Cast down your bucket, where you are" - Booker T. Washington |

Strike / Shine ...
Essentially, D'Whyte is just finding more & more creative ways to squeeze even more & more loot outta watering this shtuff down ... And it's only making it even THAT much easier for us to get into this - and possibly without having to do but juat a WEE bit more than what we're currently doing NOW! The more they continue to keep watering down this shtuff ... The EASIER they are making it for those of us at the I-AA level who MAY just wanna pursue stepping up their games just a smidge to possibly explore making that jump. In fact ... It MAY soon get to the point that those I-AA's who they may NEED to make it work will just be brought in WITHOUT having to do anything extra. After this coming year's BCS Game ... and yet ANOTHER school or two gets snubbed &/or gets dissed by being placed in a bowl game they feel they didn't deserve to go to ... look for yet ANOTHER discussion of I-A Playoffs to come up. Someone's congressman/politician is going to get pissed, and will join the rest of those whose alma maters were duped outta the prestige & millionz in cash from bowl, alumni, & corporate donor dollars - & themselves outta at least a year's worth of political bragging rights & influence on the Hill - in the past, and in the next couple years someone is going to come up with a system that's GONNA satisfy everyone ... or at a minimum is gonna strongarm the NCAA - AND some of the advertisers who underwrite it all - into accepting ... If JUST to keep the Fed's minds away from possibly delving even deeper into shtuff, and REALLY gettin' into their s***! ... And as we've stated in the past ... In order to pull it all off in a few years, they are likely gonna need some of the best of the current I-AA's to join the circus under the BIG Top, and get it all to make more sense geographically - if not make it even more financially feasible by cutting everyone's travel costs. If you now look at the sad state of some of these bowl games - as well as some of this past year's drab @ss bowl matchups - they are gonna NEED some NuBloodz to keep folks in some of these bowl communities interested in continuing on with them ... and especially as more & more bowl games continues to dilute their respective relevances ... and with it now only requiring just SIX wins to get in one, you can't tell us that if some of "US" actually got competitive enough to do just that in a few short years, that with the travelling fanbases that some of us have NOW that some of these cities wouldn't fall all over themselves to invite some of us to be a part of all this. You gonna tell us that Charlotte wouldn't love to see NC A&T or App State playing in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, New Orleans & Shreveport woudln't kill for Southern or Grambling to be in a future New Orleans Bowl or Independence Bowl instead of the crumb squads that were likely dragged in there this year, Memphis, Birmingham - or even NASHVILLE - wouldn't mind TSU to also be in a Liberty, Papa John's, or Music City Bowl occasionally, or JSU & FAMU get invited to ANY Bowls we get invited to ("personally wouldn't mind the Las Vegas, Hawaii, or any of those Texas Bowls")? Folks ... "It may indeed be time to start seriously thinking BIGGER!" This message has been edited. Last edited by: FAMUVenom, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Just Remember... Venom,
You and I are cool and all, but if what you state here^^^^is what I think it is, and that is yet ANOTHER argument for FAMU and other BCF programs to go 1-A, I think I'll just have to chill/ from this board for a minute. No disrespect, homeboy, but a brutha can simply NOT take another month long discussion/debate/argument on FAMU or ANY OTHER black college football program moving up to 1-A. God help us all. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Cast down your bucket, where you are" - Booker T. Washington |
