Head Coach |
I heard that Cynthia Cooper is in the running for the Head Coaching job at FAMU.
If that's true, then I'm REALLY IMPRESSED. I have to give you some props for that one, if its true. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Jackson State's cut from the SCG |

So your saying we shouldn't go after the best person available if he/she is currently working at a HBCU? What kind of nonsense is that? Didn't A&T get its current Chancellor from Coppin? |

first of all, yes, our current chancellor is from coppin. but the difference is he applied for our job on his own initiative. we didn't steal him from coppin by offering him more money, he applied for a&t's job on his own. big difference, milli! huge difference! secondly, i'm saying there's plenty of qualified assistant coaches at hbcu's and/or coaches in general elsewhere. hampton, morgan, and norfolk were this year's 3 most successful basketball teams in the meac (during the regular season) and all 3 coaches were relatively newly hired head coaches. none of those 3 coaches were stolen from fellow hbcu's. unlike those 3 institutions, famu chose not to do their own homework to find a non-committed coach that's right for famu. famu had rather take shortcuts, use the crabs in a barrel mentality and steal a fellow hbcu's head coach with no consideration for the hbcu institutions they're stealing from. none! no, a&t didn't steal its chancellor. but the same can't be said for famu's president, ad, and head football coach, not to mentioned failed attempts to steal coaches from a&t and grambling. now you're going after prairie view's coach? and to make matters worse, all this has been done in less than one year! do you see a trend? i don't think famu's approach improves its relationships with fellow hbcu's, perhap's famu doesn't care. and that's my point. maybe famu should change its mascot to a crab instead of a snake… _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ oleschoolaggie, coming to an hbcu near you... |

What makes you think none of the people you mentioned applied for their jobs at FAMU? What information do you have that they didn't approach us? If someone works for your institution and wants to work at FAM...is that our fault or yours? Instead of saying FAMU has a crab mentality what you should be asking is what is it about FAMU that makes these people want to leave their current position and make the move to Tally. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |

Ammon is an FAMU alum. Like you Chancellor, he applied for the position. Everybody knew eventually Ammons was going to become FAMU's president. Coach Taylor wanted out of Hampton that's why his name has come up in about 5 other coach vacancies before. Hayes came to FAMU due to his experience working with Ammons. It's very common for a employee to change jobs to work with his/her former supervisor/boss if they have a good relationship. It's not like we're clubbing people over the head forcing them to come. |

Posted May 07, 2008 11:27 AM http://rattlernews.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/articl...0507/FAMU06/80507014 May 7, 2008 FAMU chooses high school coach for women's basketball vacancy Tallahassee Democrat, Doug Blackburn, Asst. Sports Editor Florida A&M University reached into the high school ranks for its new head women’s basketball coach. Ledawn Gibson, a successful coach at Winter Haven High the past 12 years, was introduced on Wednesday as the Lady Rattlers’ new basketball coach. She replaces Debra Clark, whose contract was not renewed after seven years at FAMU. Gibson’s three-year, $90,000 contract was approved by the FAMU board Wednesday morning. “I like to win,” Gibson said. “I’m going to come full force, just like I did in high school.” The 39-year-old Gibson compiled a record of 331-48 at Winter Haven, which was the Class 5A runner-up last season. She won state titles in 2005 and 2007. “I’m tickled to death. This young lady has passion and she just radiates passion,” FAMU Athletic Director William Hayes said. “I think she’s going to be a great fit for our program.” Among Gibson’s first duties will be meeting the returning players from a team that started the 2007-08 season with a nine-game winning streak, but finished 14-17 and went just 3-8 in MEAC play. She’ll also be interviewing for assistant coaches. “I’m coming in with a clean slate,” the Winter Haven native said. “Last year was last year. We’re going to build around our character.” FAMU President James Ammons, who helped place an orange Rattlers cap atop Gibson’s head at the conclusion of her press conference, praised the newest member of the university’s athletic department. “Today is the dawn of a new era in the life of the women’s basketball program at Florida A&M,” Ammons said. “I’m confident we found the right coach for our program.” |

*sheesh*
Stuff like this happens all the time. If a company wants you to come work for them, they will seek you out and try to get you on their team. It means that they want to get the best candidate they can, regardless of present employment. No different with a school or any other organization. This happens at PWCs all the time. They WANT someone, so they SEEK THEM OUT. You never know if they are interested in working for you or if they are happy at their current position until you inquire. FAMU may be a good fit for some, and not for others. If they are a good fit, and WANT to be here, then we will open our arms to them and welcome them into the Rattler family! |
