Don't think it's the last game. The new area is not scheduled to open until Feb 09. There are usually a couple of home games in January.

Props to you for the confidence. Good luck.

May I point out that FAMU only beat UMES (1st round opponent) by 2 the last time, in the closing seconds about 10 days ago? And the potential quarterfinal opponent (NSU), beat you by 11 on your home floor? And that your likely semifinal opponent, either Hampton or Coppin, both beat you last time you played them?

I'm just sayin'.

Recent history should tell you that everything that happens during the regular season means absolutely nothing when it comes tourney time...

FAMU snatches win from rival
Akini Akini's double-double helps FAMU beat rival Bethune-Cookman
By Jim Lamar • DEMOCRAT SPORTS EDITOR • March 7, 2008

It was billed as Senior Night. It ended up being one heck of a house party.

With more than 3,600 fans dancing, chanting and stepping the night away at Gaither Gymnasium, the Florida A&M men's basketball team spanked rival Bethune-Cookman 69-50.

The victory meant little to the Rattlers' seed in next week's MEAC tournament; FAMU is slotted as the sixth seed and is expected to play 11th-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C. But the atmosphere meant plenty to FAMU's players and coaches, who played to the crowd almost as much as they were fueled by the crowd.

"The Rattler Nation was in here tonight," FAMU coach Eugene Harris said.

So were the Rattlers (14-16, 9-7) — and especially their seniors.

Leon High graduate Akini Akini (12 points, 10 rebounds) and fellow seniors Jon Mason (13 points, three 3-pointers) and L.C. Robinson (10 points, three assists) made the most of their last chance to play in front of the home crowd. Junior Lamar Twitty added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Rattlers shot 50 percent (27 for 54) from the field and 43.5 percent (10 for 23) from 3-point range.

"We made some big shots early, and that really helped," Harris said.

The biggest of those shots came from Mason, Twitty and Robinson, who took turns knocking down long-range bombs early in the second half. Mason made 5 of 6 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range). Harris, sensing Mason was heating up, ran consecutive set plays for his senior late in the game. Mason slipped off staggered screens both times to cash in on the scoring opportunities as the Rattlers raced to a 63-36 lead with 5:36 remaining.

"For the last five games, we've gotten some great play out of Jon Mason," Harris said. "In this league you've got to play eight or nine people. And E.J. Maul and Mason are really stepping up. That's a tremendous plus for our basketball team."

It's showed in how the Rattlers have closed out the regular season. Five straight MEAC victories have the defending conference champions thinking big.

"It has been a difficult transition this year," Mason said. "We had three new coaches and we were trying to adjust to that. But we've been playing pretty good lately. Tonight seemed like a couple of those teams from the past years."

With the game never really in question in the second half, the game almost became a distraction to the party in the stands.

A full contingent of students — as well as the Marching 100 — turned Gaither Gym into a giant house party. Each timeout featured choreography better suited for music videos, with both teams' cheerleading squads taking turns trying to one-up each other. The fans didn't just do the Wave; they put three versions on display — at regular speed, slow motion and fast-forward.

"It was great," Mason said. "Our fans came out and supported us. But B-CC is a special one. That's our rival and our fans showed up tonight."

That's a dumb title for this story. It implies that there was some kind of closeness to the game and one "snatched" it away from the other. Wudent even much close. Laugh

Congrats on the win. Thumb Up

This IS basketball right? I hate basketball. Mad It's dumb all the running around and everybody looking like they fouling and running. Never could get that right.

We've got a great draw IMHO. Split with CSU and they needed a 3 pointer at the buzzer and OT for that split. Only played NSU/HIU once but definitely winnable. We're playing really good basketball of late with wins over MSU, DSU, SCSU, WSSU, UMES and BCU with a lone loss in six games to CSU in a OT thriller. I like our chances cause our gaurds have been in this and successful from last year's tourney. If our coach doesn't nut up we won't be an ez out by no means.
