Marion Jones sentenced in NY to six months in jail

Marion Jones, the champion sprinter in the 2000 Olympics who would later be stripped of her medals after admitting steroid use, was sentenced Friday to six months in jail and two years of probation for lying about her doping as well as her role in a $5 million check-kiting ring.

Jones, who married last year and now goes by Marion Jones-Thompson, received a relatively light punishment because federal sentencing guidelines called for a range from probation to six months or one year in prison.

Jones previously admitted that she lied about her involvement in the check scheme as well as taking performance-enhancing drugs, including a powerful steroid known as “the clear,” for about a year prior to her glorious run at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where she won three gold medals and two bronze in track and field events.

In the check-kiting case, Jones lied to federal agents about receiving a $25,000 check in 2005 from her then-boyfriend and fellow track superstar Tim Montgomery. That check was part of the proceeds from a $200,000 counterfeit check that Montgomery tried to launder through Portsmouth businessman Nathaniel Alexander.

Jones apologized to the court, her family and her fans and tearfully pleaded with the judge to spare her prison time for the sake of her two young sons. "I pray that you be as merciful as a human being can be," she told the judge.

Later today, Steve Riddick, a former Norfolk State coach who trained Jones and Montgomery, and Alexander will be sentenced in the case. Riddick and Alexander were found guilty after trial in May for their roles in the check scheme. They continue to maintain their innocence.

Montgomery pleaded guilty in the case last year and is scheduled to be sentenced in April.

Boy I sure feel safer with her off the street. Lying to federal investigators, wow what a crime. Roll Eyes This make about as much sense as throwing Martha Stewart in jail. I would have given year 3 yrs probation and 1 year community service

What she did was a crime, right? If Little Kim and Martha went to prison, this fool certainly deserves to go.

If it was pro-sports, I really wouldnt have a problem with her juicing. The way I see it, there is very, very little difference between cyclists using epo to increase red blood cell concentration, wrestlers using it to get "Large" or ball players juicing to enhance performance.

The olympics is SUPPOSED to be about pure athletic competition and should be "un-aided". The records should have been stripped and her medals returned. Jail? Yes. Not for juicing, but for lying in court. I really dont have a problem with her country club sentence for 6 months.

Hopefully, she can simply move on and have a decent life.

Our people need to get a clue and be more cognizant of the laws. Lying to a federal agent is an indictable offense, end of story. Some of our brothers and sisters would be better served by exercising their constitutional rights; or are they not aware of their rights.

To not know your rights is worst than having a job and not know the rules, procedures, and personnel manual as it applies to your employment.

I just have a problem with the judge making the following statement:

quote:
U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas said he gave her the maximum under the plea deal to send a message to athletes who have abused drugs and overlooked the values of "hard work, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship."

"Athletes in society have an elevated status, they entertain, they inspire, and perhaps, most important, they serve as role models," Karas said.

Did the Judge give her the maximun for what she did, or for what she was, an athlete? To me he's stating that he give her that sentence because of reportedly other athletes abusing drugs.

Jones Sentenced

"SENDING A MESSAGE", "MAKING AND EXAMPLE OF", etc., not unusual or rare in the judicial system (Feds).

Keep your mouth closed and lawyer up Thumb Up

Are they punishing her for Roids or cashing bad checks?

I think the check cashing is the worst offense.

Remember she got 6 months, the maximum for the plea deal. That had been the rumored sentence for months, though just a little while back the judge indicated that she could be given two 6 month sentences given it was two offenses.

Damn, I am looking at Marion on TV right now. The judge has to be a racist or gay. No way you can send a fine azz woman who happens to be a sista to prison for a first offense that is minor. No way white woman as pretty as Marion go to prison on a first offense like this.

Doesn't matter that she actually used the roids ... This just shows that it just doesn't pay to lie to the Feds.

She probably got off light for the $5M in check scandals alone ... let alone the rest of the shtuff!

Let's just wait until Roger and Barry's episodes play out!!

Fine woman? Have you not seen her smile or open her mouth? Maybe you'd say otherwise in that case.

Besides, she's only a few close steps behind some of those East German swimmers in the physique department. Not for me.
