Source: Johnson ousted after Mavs' playoff exit
By Marc Stein ESPN.com (Archive) Updated: April 30, 2008, 2:08 PM ET Comment The Dallas Mavericks parted company with coach Avery Johnson on Wednesday, a day following the team's first-round exit from the NBA playoffs, ESPN.com has learned. Speculation about Johnson's future with the franchise had been mounting for weeks, ever since Dallas struggled to reach the playoffs as the seventh seed following its midseason acquisition of point guard Jason Kidd from New Jersey. Johnson became Mavs coach during the 2004-05 season and walks away with a 194-70 record (.735), but only a 23-24 mark in the playoffs and 3-12 in the postseason since Dallas' dismantling by Miami in the 2006 NBA Finals. Host New Orleans wrapped up a 4-1 series rout of Dallas with Tuesday night's 99-94 victory. "This is tough for me," Johnson said after the game, not specifically responding to a question about his job security but struggling to contain his disappointment after the Mavs' second straight flameout in the first round. NBA front-office offices sources told ESPN.com that both the Mavs and Johnson, feeling that a coaching change was inevitable, wanted to come to a resolution quickly so Dallas could begin interviewing candidates and Johnson could pursue another job. Sources close to the situation have said that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban actually considered firing Johnson before the playoffs, specifically after Cuban and Johnson engaged in an emotional argument after a March 18 home loss to the Lakers. Cuban refused to speak with reporters after Tuesday's loss -- Dallas' ninth playoff defeat in a row on the road since taking a 2-0 lead in the 2006 Finals. Urrbody luh basseboll, just not today. He'll find work; being a NBA head coach is like looking for a customer service job, they're always firing and hiring.

aj's firing is no big deal. most nba coaches don't last more than 3 or 4 years anyway. longevity-wise, you're talkin' jerry sloan, gregg popovich, phil jackson, and maybe eddie jordan. the rest of them are basically playing musical chairs. by the way, i happen to think jerry sloan may be the best active coach in the nba. he wins with less year after year. utah and san antonio, by far, play the most disciplined basketball in the nba. that's why they consistently win every year…

They want to rub shoulders with the Secretary of State, all that kind of business. To do that, you've got to play the game, and playing the game means telling their lies, serving as their disinformation apparatus." - Noam Chomsky "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945 |

This wasn't a surprise. He's been running the same isolation play for Dirk the last 3 years. It's only a matter of time between the other coaches figure out how to stop that. He didn't utilize the talent that the Mavs have. There's no reason why they should've gotten ran through the way they did.

That is a good point. But also take in consideration of the players not wanting it and the other players needed to step up besides Dirk who I critize for being "SOFT" and can't lead his team to the title right along with Phoenix who has not figured out yet how to beat the Spurs despite playing them every year in the playoffs. Until Dirk becomes a tougher leader and having some player that will become tougher and wanting it, Dallas will never win. Avery Johnson was not the problem, the players was and I wonder if you can fire the owner for firing a good coach like Johnson? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1gramblingfan |
