First of all, congratulations to WSSU Rams. They won 71-63 tonight....

But make no mistake, Coach Eaves cost us the game tonight with his stubborness and his behavior. Everyone knows by now that Steven Rush didn't play tonight due to elbowing a DSU guard in the game 5 days ago.

Tonight, we needed offensive production, Late in the first half, Jones made a mistake on defense.....the coach took him out and didn't play him the rest of the game

In the second half, he has Austin Ewing running the point guard position - Glenn Nelson is BY FAR THE HEADIEST POINT GUARD the Aggies have, yet he doesn't allow him to run the offense.

His substitution patterns are flat out horrendous. This man doesn't know his personnel and it shows by the way he haphazardly makes his substitutions.

AND FINALLY.......Coach Eaves tonight cost A&T the game tonight by getting a DOUBLE TECHNICAL FOUL near the end of the game that got him ejected and cost the team the game. He was in the wrong all the way around.

This man dogs the team anytime it makes a small mistake.....HE NEEDS TO TAKE HONUS FOR COSTING THE AGGIES THE GAME TONIGHT

His stubborness and behavior were straight up COLOREDISH and he is the SOLE REASON why we lost. The team played hard without Rush - the coach didn't match them on the sidelines.....

Folks may say "Well at least we ain't as bad as we were a few years ago..." I ain't going for that. This team has UNDERACHIEVED ALL YEAR, and the coach is to blame. He doesn't know what he has, doesn't know what to coach what he has, and chides the teams for making mistakes when it is ultimately HIS MISTAKES that costs us games

This man has hit the invisible ceiling as far as his ability to coach and lead the Aggies up the MEAC totem pole. He cannot take us any further.

His performance/behavior tonight was straight up ridiculous. This man is not the answer at A&T

You are right. I love my school, but I have a serious problem with their selection process of choosing a coach. When I hear A&T is going to form a selection committee to choose anything, I get nervous.

If this is true, a&t needs to look into this guy's behavior. Those late Ts were just dumb.

If you think what he did oncourt was disgraceful, you should've seen him after the game. He knocked on the offical's door to get them to come out and kept saying stuff like "The whole building knows that call was wrong." No lie, I heard it myself.

Although I was not at the game, I think saying what the coach did is disgraceful is a bit strong. When I was in school and we played WSSU in Winston Salem, I used to leave the game raising hell because of the bad calls.

But didn't coach Eaves' selection as the A&T coach bring rave reviews from the Aggie Nation initially?

NSS, you should be careful with that kind of talk. You won't find many supporters because most Aggies are satisfied with a .500 record in basketball and any measure of improvement in football, regardless of wins.
I'm sure it It won't take long before an apologist starts pointing out what Eaves doesn't have or the shape this program was in five years ago. Last year when I suggested that we wait until the end of the season before giving him a contract extension folks jumped all in my case.

Numerous fans were turned away at the door because the capacity for LJM coliseum annex had been met. There was a high school wrestling championship being held in the main coliseum which is much larger. Unfortunately, the news media interviewed many of the disenchanted fans who said that they had traveled from Ga. and Va. to attend the game. Of course there were a number of A&T and WSSU students who came for the men's game and were turned away. The same thing happened in the previous game at A&T even though the Corbett Center holds over 6000. The schools may need to book both coliseums early in order to accommodate their fans.

I agree with you that the coliseums in both cities need to be reserved well in advance to accomodate this game. As a resident of Greensboro I knew I would not attend either game because of the small arenas being used. Both of those games could have probably drawn around 10,000 fans for each game. A lot of money could have been made.

It seems that it is the younger generation that wants to remain on campus for the so called "hype". You can have that same hype at the coliseum. I have seen that when NCCU and A&T use to play their games at the Greensboro Coliseum in the 1990s. One year that game drew over 10,000 fans on a Wednesday or Thursday night.

Two years ago NCCU and WSSU played at the LJVM Annex. That was my first and only time going inside of that place. I knew last night was going to be a huge problem. While listening to the game on the WSSU radio station their announcers were saying during the second half of the women's game that the place was filled to capacity. They said if you were on your way to the game don't come, you will not get in.

Rams knock off Aggies 71-63

There haven’t been many highlights so far in Winston-Salem State’s move to Division I. Last night, however, just might be a lasting memory after a 71-63 victory over rival N.C. A&T.

About 500 people were turned away at the door of the Joel Coliseum Annex, as 4,200 packed the place.

“They missed a good one, that’s for sure,” Coach Bobby Collins of the Rams said of the unlucky fans who couldn’t get in.

The Rams did everything right down the stretch, and with some help from Aggies coach Jerry Eaves, picked up their signature win of the season.

“We just got after it and were so focused all week, it was just our time,” said point guard Roy Peake, who played one of the best games of his long career. Peake, a fifth-year senior, scored 14 points, had six assists, three steals and was everywhere defensively. He played 39 minutes.

Peake, looking as fresh as when the game started, was all smiles afterward.

“I don’t have much time left out here, so I wasn’t going to let us lose,” Peake said. “We all came up big in this game.”

The Rams were clinging to a 62-60 lead with 36 seconds left and Darius Floyd at the free-throw line. He made the first free throw to make it 63-60 but missed the second one. On the rebound attempt, Paul Davis of the Rams appeared to go over the back of an Aggies player, but no call was made as the ball went out of bounds.

Officials gave the ball to the Rams, and an incensed Eaves lost control. He went out to half court to argue, was called for a technical, continued to argue and was called for a second technical, which is an automatic ejection.

“Everyone in the whole building knows he missed the call,” Eaves said. “It was just one of those situations and the league office is going to hear about this.”

The MEAC office, which suspended the Aggies’ best player, Steven Rush, for last night’s game for an unsportsmanlike elbow he threw in Monday’s loss to Delaware State, will likely be looking into Eaves’ behavior after the game. He tried to confront the officials in a locker room at the Annex, but never did get a chance to speak his mind.

“I just want one of them to admit they missed the call,” he said as he waited outside the officials’ locker room.

Beyond the ejection, however, Eaves said it was a great game in a great atmosphere.

“This is why these two schools play, and it was just a high-energy game,” Eaves said. “They made all the right plays and came up big at the end.”

After Eaves was ejected, Darrell Wonge hit three of four free throws to put the game out of reach at 66-60. The Rams hit five more free throws in the last 29 seconds to secure the win.

Wonge and Peake, who are both four-year players for the Rams, will get to enjoy senior night on Monday when the Rams play Norfolk State. But they got a head start by coming up big in last night’s game.

Wonge scored 16 points, had three assists and added two steals while Jamal Durham, a junior who has also been through the rough transition to Division I as well, led the way with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He had three dunks, including a vicious two-handed slam late in the first half when he went right through two Aggies.

“It has been a rough couple of years,” said Durham, who was a part of the 5-24 debacle of last season. “To beat a team like A&T on our home court and to get a signature win like this is just incredible. We haven’t smiled a lot around here of late, but this is nice because we owed them one from when they beat us in Greensboro.”

The Aggies (13-13) shot a season-best 70 percent in the first half, but led 34-31. They went six minutes without scoring early in the second half and the Rams took advantage.

Peake and Durham were right in the middle of the surge. On one sequence, Peake split the defense driving the lane and dropped a perfect pass to Davis, who converted a layup and was fouled. Davis missed the ensuing free throw, but the Rams got the rebound and later Durham’s five-foot hook shot was good for a 41-36 lead with 12:40 to play.

Keeping the Aggies close, however, was Jason Wills who scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Robert Johnson (14 points) put the Aggies ahead 54-53 with 5:10 to go on a layup.

With 4:42 to go Davis hit a nice 10-foot fadeaway jumper to give the Rams back the lead they wound up never lose.

The Rams were clinging to a 62-60 lead with 50 seconds to go when the Aggies’ Glenn Nelson came driving down the right side of the lane, but Durham and Davis where there to block his path. Nelson’s layup attempt was blocked and the Rams came up with the loose ball. Floyd hit one free throw with 36 seconds left before Eaves’ technical fouls.

“I can’t say enough about how the guys just didn’t wilt down the stretch,” said Collins, whose team shot 53 percent and had three turnovers in the second half. “And Roy Peake was a warrior with how he played. He and Jamal and Darrell weren’t going to let us lose that edge.”

The Rams (10-15) also had to play most of the game without their second-leading scorer, guard Brian Fisher, who has a slight meniscus tear in his right knee, according to athletics trainer Darrell Turner. Fisher hurt the knee with 1:56 left in the half in a scrum while going for a loose ball. Turner said that Fisher could play in Monday’s game.

Despite not having Fisher available, Floyd, Peake and Isiah Tucker controlled the flow of the game in the backcourt. The Aggies applied the same pressure they did when the Rams were clobbered 75-56 in Greensboro on Jan. 26 but this time they broke the pressure and attacked the basket.

The official capacity of Corbett Sports Center is 5,700. It used to be 7,500 before the bleachers on the lower level were removed.

you do have a point, but myself & some of the "younger generation" have agreed that if the game wasnt at corbett, alot of us wouldnt attend the game...also it would take affect away from the Maniacs, band, & possibly even the cheerleaders...the coliseum just doesnt have a HBCU or MEAC atmosphere.

I am tryinig to understand why you and your friends would not attend the game if it was not at Corbett. You wouldn't support your team if it's games were played at the coliseum? Please explain why.

Must agree with sixties aggie, NCCU v.s NCA&TSU, WSSU v.s. NCA&TSU both need to be played in The Coliseum, whether it be Lawerence Joel Coliseum, or Greensboro Coliseum they would be MONEYMAKERS!

Don't know which Coliseum NCCU would utilize, RBC don't want the MEAC in the Building!

Back in the Day before enrollments were at an all-time high for all 3 HBCU'S, these games were BARNBURNERS in Greensboro Coliseum and the ole Coliseum in Winston, Quite sure that all 3 could attain success and make money as well!

The STATE of NC loves when any of 3 get together, especially when the opponent is A&T!
