Lozada's a hit for Bethune-Cookman

NORFOLK, Va. – Bethune-Cookman’s Jose Lozada, the 2008 MEAC Player of the Year, proved Saturday afternoon that he was effective both hitting pitches and getting hit by them.

Lozada hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the fifth, then, after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth, came around to score what proved to be the winning run on Emmanuel Castro’s single. Top-seeded Bethune-Cookman escaped the winner’s bracket game against North Carolina A&T with a 3-2 victory.

The Wildcats advance to Sunday’s championship game with a 2-0 tournament record. They will meet either A&T or Norfolk State in the 2 p.m. final, and one of those teams will have to beat Bethune-Cookman twice to steal the title from the reigning champs.

Bethune-Cookman was able to win despite getting only three hits off Aggies starter Marquise Frink. Frink struck out a career-high 14 batters, but he got himself in trouble by hitting five batters.

Wildcats starter Gio Gautier was equally impressive, scattering six hits over 8 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Phil Enright came on to earn the save.

Norfolk State continues magical march by ousting A&T

NORFOLK, Va. – The improbable ride of the Norfolk State baseball team hasn’t stopped yet. Saturday night, it punched its ticket to the next destination: the MEAC championship game.

Four different players drove in two runs, and the Spartans got another gritty pitching performance in routing North Carolina A&T, 10-5, at Marty L. Miller Field. NSU will face top-seeded Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m. Sunday with the unenviable task of having to beat the Wildcats not once but twice to earn the conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals.

The victory exorcised a couple of demons for Norfolk State. First, North Carolina A&T had eliminated the Spartans from the tournament the last six years. Second, at 25-23 heading into Sunday’s game, NSU is guaranteed its first winning season since 2000.

Congrats BCU and tSU. My Jags were the favorite in the Swac and were upset by PVU. PVU had to beat SU twice to reach the championship and they pulled off the imposible by winning 5-4 and 15-14 Mad. But any way here is a couple of pics from Saturday's game which SU beat PV 14-9. The tournament was held @ SU's Lee Hines field.

"This is not a knock on the major white universities, but they can't nurture young black males like a HBCU. Auburn and Alabama can't do that. LSU can't do that. It's not in their DNA. Close down some of the HBCUs and you'd better plan on building some more prisons.''
