Stadium's future now lies in JSU's, DFA's hands Sid Salter ssalter@clarionledger.com The last time that Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium was filled to its official capacity of 60,492, your trusty scribe had a reasonably full head of hair. Consider the photo of the bald guy below Exhibit A in today's column. For anyone looking seriously at the future of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the numbers tell the tale. The last time Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium was filled to capacity was 1984, when Alcorn State University took on Mississippi Valley State University for the 1984 SWAC championship. Alcorn beat Valley 42-28 before 63,808 fans. Originally called Mississippi Memorial Stadium, the stadium was proposed as a 35,000-seat monument to the state's veterans of World Wars I and II. The stadium was later completed to the 46,000 seat level in the 1950s. The stadium often had capacity crowds for Southeastern Conference games in the 1960s and 1970s - crowds swelling to the point that in 1980, the decision was made to expand the stadium by 16,500 seats to 62,500 seats. Subsequent renovations dropped the current seating to the official 60,492 seats. Change of direction But almost before the expansion was completed, changing sports management economics nationwide made it more profitable for Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi to play their home games on campus rather than in Jackson. The schools slowly stopped playing in Jackson. A 1988 Clarion-Ledger analysis showed that in the eight seasons following the 1980 expansion, only 24 of 103 football games drew more fans than the pre-expansion capacity of 46,000. State-owned stadiums at Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi were expanded and retrofitted for modern conveniences like skyboxes and chairback seats. They also are fully compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. Alcorn State got a new modern stadium built on the Lorman campus. MVSU's Willie Totten Stadium got a makeover of sorts as well. But Jackson State still doesn't have an on-campus stadium and is still playing in Veteran's Stadium. Here's where the numbers begin to complicate things. Where are the fans? In 2007, JSU's storied football program returned to prominence, beating Grambling State 42-31 to win the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship - JSU's first SWAC title since 1996 and the school's 16th in its history. But through the first six JSU "home" games at Veterans Stadium, attendance averaged 12,818. Even with 32,506 fans who attended the 2007 Capital City Classic game between JSU and arch rival Alcorn, the season "home" game attendance average was 15,631. JSU justifiably wants its own on-campus stadium, like all of Mississippi's football-playing public colleges and universities already have. But dismal attendance figures in a championship season don't help JSU's cause. Those figures don't help build a new on-campus stadium and they don't help keep "the Vet" standing. Beginning July 1, the stadium will be managed by the Department of Finance and Administration. JSU will manage and promote its own football games. DFA is working to bring the stadium up to code and to improve traffic control, concessions and other amenities. But the bottom line is, well, bottoms - bottoms in seats, that is. That's funny.... Come on TightEye you know what you just did right? You just gave TigerPride and JayRob an excuse to eat up valuable bandwidth on this site.
They will first start by defending JSU. Then they're gonna tell us how great JSU is and how the MEAC can't compete against JSU. Finally they will do what they do best (especially TigerPride); devert the attention from the issue/topic and start bashing posters who comment and their respective universities. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |

Just laughing to myself and wondering why their attendance drops one year and then booms the next..... I bet they will be fine this fall though.

I wish that I could find that old thread in which I warned TP that the state was taking over the MVMC............He forgot that they are still in Mississippi.

Boy, I'm highly surprised at you Black folks. Some of you will believe anything, just as long as the White man says it.
The article claimed that JSU's attendance ended up being around 15,000. That's not correct at all. Not including the usual four to five thousand fans not counted, the numbers were around 17,000 per game. You average in those not counted, you would easily get 20,000 plus per game. Now that we have control, this foolishness will be rectified. You guys know this story is highly slanted, biased and full of inaccuracies. How can you be so easily fooled and gullibled into believing such propaganda?! It boggles the mind that it's so easy. JSU has been in the top five to ten in HBCU and D-1AA football attendance for years, yet ONE White boy columnist prints ONE article, and all of the history and "real" stats are immediately thrown out the window. This is unbelievable, especially coming from someone from Tennessee State. I guess the old saying goes, "if it's White, it must be right". This message has been edited. Last edited by: JayRob, |

It's mighty interesting that you acknowledge the fact that JSU is in Mississippi, yet you're so quick to believe a Mississippi White boy. Talk about an oxymoron, you just created a new definition for it. |

Then why not go ahead and post a point by point rebuttal to the article? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ A&T Class of 2020 |

Dude, if you're insinuating that SU drove our attendance up, just keep in mind that the photos clearly show that JSU had three times as many folks at the game than SU, so what's your point? |

Says the guy who school is using the WHITE MAN'S stadium. GET YOUR OWN before you start criticizing. Plus I didn't know a white guy wrote the article. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |

Enough info on attendance has been posted on the MEAC to write a book. For info, refer back to past threads on attendance involving SWAC and MEAC schools. It will tell you all you need to know. This is really unbelievable. |

I-AA/FCS attendance numbers are posted at the end of every season. JSU's attendance every year since this board has been created has been posted every year on this board. Why would I, or anyone else from JSU, have to post that stuff again. We've had discussions about the undercounts that go on at JSU games. It's nothing new. And it's nothing that I'm gonna waste my time trying to rebut, point by point or otherwise.

Dude, that's a public stadium paid for by tax dollars. Are you saying that Black folks tax dollars are not to be counted as are White folks tax dollars? |

So does JSU have any aspirations of building their own campus stadium? That way, JSU can really and truly control the attendance numbers, since you all seem to think this dude don't know what he's talking about,,,,according to you JSU posters?

To me the article wasn't about HBCU or FCS attendance. I saw the main point as questioining the usefulness of a 60,000 seat stadium for a team with declining attendance for 2007. Most of us know that JSU is usually a leader in attendance so if what he says is true, what caused the decline? That's where you guys can set the record straight. He also fails to mention anything about JSU's lease agreement leaving the impression the state bears all the cost for JSU's usage of the stadium. There's a lot you all can set us straight on.

Yes, JSU has aspirations for its own stadium. That very issue was before the state legislature this past session. Instead of agreeing to fund an on-campus stadium immediately, the legislature awarded control of the stadium to JSU, with the state Dept. of Finance managing it for JSU's benefit. This was short term fix to JSU's issues. However, the bigger issue is the land upon which Memorial Stadium sits. Univeristy Medical Center, across the street from the stadium, is chomping at the bit to obtain that property so it can continue expanding. Ole Miss owns UMC. What UMC wants, UMC gets. Eventually, that land will go to UMC and Memorial Stadium demolished. Before that happens JSU will get an on-campus stadium. Not because it's the right thing to do for JSU, but because the rich white folk gotta get richer, and an HBCU gotta be taken care of to get it done. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |

I'm surprised JSU only averaged less than 13K (without the help of the CCC) for a championship team year.
However, I think JSU will do well with a 20-25K seat stadium _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Still wearing thy colors....THE BLUE AND THE WHITE !!

c/o 2001- QTIV |
