For the third straight year, North Carolina marched into Cameron Indoor and marched away with a win. This time, the win gave the Tar Heels the ACC regular-season title.

No. 1 UNC pulls past Duke for ACC regular season crown

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Tyler Hansbrough scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, and top-ranked North Carolina scored the final 10 points on the way to a 76-68 win over No. 6 Duke to claim the Atlanta Coast Conference regular season championship.

Danny Green added 18 points, eight rebounds and blocked seven shots for the Tar Heels (29-2, 14-2), who closed the ACC regular season by not only winning the title, but also avenging an 89-78 loss to the Blue Devils on February 6. North Carolina hasn't lost since then, rattling off eight consecutive victories.

Wayne Ellington had 16 points and Ty Lawson, who missed the first Duke game with a sprained ankle, added 10 points for the Tar Heels, who gained the top seed for the ACC Tournament next week.

Greg Paulus had 15 points for Duke (26-4, 13-2), which shot 32.9 percent from the field and had a four-game win streak broken. Jon Scheyer had 14 points, while Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler each scored 10 in defeat.

Scheyer's tip-in gave Duke a 68-66 edge, but Ellington's layup tied it.

Hansbrough put the Tar Heels on top for good when he ripped down an offensive rebound and banked the ball off the glass for a 70-68 contest with just over two minutes to go.

Paulus then missed a long three-pointer, and Lawson hit two foul shots with 1:31 remaining.

Lawson then came up with a steal from Henderson and raced the length of the court, but missed a layup. However, Green tipped in the miss with 49.6 seconds left for a 74-68 spread.

Hansbrough then blocked a shot from Scheyer, and no foul came despite Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski becoming irate on the sidelines.

Green's slam with 28.8 seconds left sealed the Tar Heels' victory.

I don't care for either team. I think REASONABLE people would say that UNC is a more talented team than Duke. The Devils are better than last year, but their talent level isn't elite 8/final 4 quality. To me, they've actually OVERACHIEVED this year - Coach K has gotten as much out of this team as one can possibly get.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

Carolina at full strength is superior to Duke. The best that Duke can do for next year is PRAY that Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansbrough leave for the NBA draft.

That's what Duke basketball has become. PRAYING that Carolina players don't stay for four years. Laugh

You're right BT, Duke better pray that those guys leave early. Look at what UNC has coming in next year:

PG Larry Drew from CA...one of the top 10 PGs in the senior class.

PF Ed Davis...#2 rated PF in the senior class, top 10 overall.

C Tyler Zeller (7-footer)...top 10 overall in senior class.

Imagine those guys WITH Lawson, Ellington and Psycho T...

Cry I've been humbled. There's nothing to explain. UNC was the better, stronger team down the stretch. We need stronger inside presence to go deep in the Big Dance, and I don't think we can do it by just relying on the 3 point shot. We might make it to the sweet sixteen. Cry

But I'm still down with DUKE BABIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! Laugh Smoke

i think ty might be leaving after this year but my gutt feel is that hansbrough will come back for his senior year. i think hansbrough loves college life and is not anxious to make the jump to the nba life style. besides, i don't think hansbrough will be a dominant pro but he's definitely a lottery pick...
