Now, we (BCF) have a chance to keep up with the Jonses' somewhat, with exclusive converage on a "light" nite for football scheduling, but now we complain about an opportunity on a "non-traditonal" nite that the Bowl Subdivision non-BCS conferences embraced and leveraged into their showcase?!?!?!?!

SMH.

Thumb Up thursday night games on the espn channels should be coveted exactly for the reasons you explained. the big east made a living on thursday night games and gained a tremendous amount of national exposure as a result...

MEAC's problem with ESPN is that we are on ESPNU while premier games are being telecast at the same time on ESPN. So, if you are not a member of MEACfans or attached to the MEAC teams playing that night you don't even know there is a game beign played. This equates to a minimum viewership and access to ESPNU to see these games is difficult anyway.

I would rather have a Wednesday night on ESPN2 than a Thursday night on ESPNU.

We're sure you would ...

And Coastal Carolina or Texas State would love to be where YOU guys are slotted to be broadcasted this coming season too!

Let's fill up all the barns, and put a "premier product" worthy of what you would like to see happen ... And we're sure D'Whyte will put it where the greatest return will bear.

Interesting, hmm who ever would have thought, that WSSU would develop a rivalry with FAMU, this is what seems to be occuring with 2 very competitive football games, I look forward to next years game, can't wait till they come to Winston though!

You basically let one get away in our barn in '06 ... and last year in Indy was simply retribution ... so this does have the potential to develop into one.

The question is ...
Will we actually be doing it in WS in '09 ... or you all planning on seeing the world again?

robber,
don't know the answer to the question, but since this game is part of the MEAC/ESPN TV deal, my uneducated guess is nada, or at least nothing above and beyond what the conference splits with each school as part of the ESPN deal.
Thats why it is critical, if for any game this year on FAMUs schedule, that all the marketing ploys are dusted off to get folks to come to the non-traditional nite to at least get the same attendance as we would have on a Saturday.

Non-traditional nite games may call for non-traditional marketing.

Good luck!!! JSU played Tx. Southern on Thursday night last season. Rained, off and on, all damn day in Jackson. Then a monsoon came through shortly after kickoff. You know folk stayed home to watch it on TV. I truly hope everything falls into place. Those games kill your gate, concessions and parking revenues. I hope the conferences give the home team enough to offset that. I wouldn't bet on it, tho.

two immediate thoughts:

1. If that (the monsoon for J-State vs. Southern) had happened on a Sat. vs. Thursday game, wouldn't the reduced attendance due to weather still been a factor?
In your example. How do you separate the weather factor from the Thurs. nite factor?

2. Should the conf. give anything above and beyond the equal cut for each school from the TV deal?
IMHO the answer may be no........each home team has marketing and should ensure that they beat the bushes to get folks to the game and make a profit, using whatever means at their disposal to do so. There is no incentive/subsidy for Sat. games, so why Thurs?
Now, if the cost of travel & lodging for the AWAY team is much more during the week than it would be for weekends (aka weekend rates), I can see the conf. offering to step in to make up the difference. other than that...... Thumb Down

Rams football game with FAMU moved to Thursday night

By John Dell | Journal Reporter

Published: May 12, 2008

Winston-Salem State's football game with Florida A&M has been moved to Thursday night on Oct. 9 to accommodate television.

The Rams and Rattlers will play in Tallahassee, Fla. in a game that will be seen on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.

Chico Caldwell, the athletics director at WSSU, says that being on national television in primetime is a bonus.

"That's one of the reasons we went to Division I," said Caldwell. "This gives us more exposure and to be playing on a Thursday night will be beneficial. So we are excited that the MEAC decided to put this game on television."

The MEAC and ESPN have a television contract to air at least four games this season, according to Caldwell.

Even though the Rams are not eligible for the MEAC championship, they will receive the television revenue from the conference.

"It's a sharing type of thing with the revenue from the television contract with all the schools," Caldwell said. "I'm not sure how much we'll receive, but we are a part of it."

Being on television isn't new for the Rams. The game with Florida A&M last year in Indianapolis was broadcast on the NFL Network.

Being on one of the ESPN channels, however, can be a bonus for recruiting, according to Coach Kermit Blount of the Rams.

"That's always a plus and to be able to put our university out there like that where our name is plastered all over television," Blount said.

Since the Rams have joined the MEAC they have formed a good rivalry with the Rattlers. In 2006 the Rams lost 25-21 in Tallahassee and last year in Indianapolis the Rams won 27-23.

"So far, so good," Blount said about the rivalry with the Rattlers. "Hopefully we can continue to build the rivalry and keep making it a good one. We know that they have had an outstanding history in this conference and we respect that."

Adding a little more fuel to the rivalry is Bill Hayes is the athletics director at FAMU. Hayes is a former coach at WSSU and coached Blount when Blount was the star quarterback at WSSU in the late 1970s.

Blount downplayed the added dimension to the rivalry.

"Coach Hayes is in an administrative position down there and deep down it means a lot but actually when we get down there to play the game it's not going to matter," Blount said.

Blount, who will be in his 16th season as head coach this fall, is 87-69-3 in his career. He needs three wins to pass Hayes (89-41-2) to become WSSU's all-time leader in victories.

I dont know what kind of "non traditional" marketing FAMU employed for last year's Thursday night game vs Norfolk...but I hope they reach in that same bag of tricks again...Despite the inclimate stormy conditions all evening...I was surprised to read the game's attendance (12K) in the paper the next morning...

I drove up from Tampa to attend the FAMU-NSU game on Thursday last year and despite the heavy showers through the first quarter, the turnout was decent. During that game, FAMU allowed all faculty and their families to attend the game for free. They probably will offer something similar for the two Thursday games this year...if the weather is great, I'm sure we will have a huge turnout.

We only have 1 home Thursday night game this year. The other one is away. I missed the game last year because of the weather and I was already sick. I hope to be in attendance this year and I hope FAMU gives out free tickets again Thumb Up Big Grin.....

I didnt know they gave away free tickets...I guess there were more than 12K that Thursday night then because that was the paid attendance...You know comping tickets is actually kind of a clever marketing scheme because a decently packed stadium on a Thursday night on ESPNU helps in legitimizing and augmenting the profile of BCF on a national scale...too bad the cameras werent rolling (like they'd promised Mad) last year though...
