I was just looking at the football schedule on Sept 13 and notice the following:

A&T at Norfolk 4 PM
Howard at Hampton 6 PM

I know that MEAC schedule is set in stone but do you think it a good idea to have two heavyweight games at or about the same time.

PS: A&T and WSSU will also have a scenario like that on Oct 25 with:

Bethune at WSSU 2 PM (homecoming)
Howard at A&T 1:30

Well, I guess the question would be, how many NSU fans go to Hampton games when NSU isn't playing, and vice versa? I don't see the problem. People are going to follow their teams.

I told ya'll this in another thread. When we were discussing a HU vs HU Labor Day showdown. Hampton has always schedule on top of NSU when Howard comes to town. They never schedule around NSU. That may change in the future as the Spartans get better and start drawing big numbers again. But, as of now Hampton is still sending out that challenge.

ksmith, NSU led the MEAC and ranked 7th in the nation in attendance last year and has drawn better than Hampton for several years. I think the future you're talking about is now.

That pretty much sums it up. Smoke

I'm predicting about 40K people watching HBCU football in the 757 on this day. Thumb Up

Outsider, the bottom line is, you were right with what you said at first. Do folks think this is the first time this has happened? It happens atleast once almost every season. Overall, both schools draw from a different fanbase. If NSU was playing Va State or Homecoming vs a normal Hampton game, chances are NSU will outdraw. If HU is playing Howard or HC vs. a normal NSU game, chances are Hampton will outdraw.

The Howard at Hampton game is usually filled to capacity. Sorry but we do not need extra fans from Norfolk.

And what so big about A&T versus Norfolk...two cellar dwellers. whoop-ti-do.

As I said, neither side relies on the others' fans very much. Actually A&T vs. NSU is becoming a big game. They have a pre-game BOTB competition which helps with attendance.

And for the record, even though it was found the final count (in 2006) excluded an entire gate--- Howard is not necessarily always Hampton's biggest home game. In 2006, the HU vs. HU game came in at #3 at home for Hampton after Battle of the Bay (vs. NSU) and Homecoming (vs. WSSU).

Ying Yang There are Hampton U. fans and there are Norfolk State fans. I don't think either one fans are going to go to a NSU game or Hampton because who they are playing on the same weekend. If the weather is good both hampton and Norfolk will draw well.

Overall agreed. If anything, since there is a 2 hour gap and only a 25 minute drive, you might have SOME fans making it to both games.

Not to my liking. I know the old NSU. I remember the following. It's why we(MEAC) begged the Spartans to come in the conference. I had friends who skipped NSU vs VSU to check out HU vs HU. I think that was the year we first hired Petty. The anticipation was high. I think two good HU teams will always be a threat to a NSU vs VSU game. If VSU becomes a MEAC member.....That game will really blow up.

Won't happen. Simple mathematics. Armstrong seats what....14k? 15K?? Price seats 30K+. And as has been stated ad nauseum, two different fan bases.

Thumb Down what's heavyweight? can't speak for hu vs. hu, but regardless of record, nsu and a&t have two of the largest fan bases in the meac. what's your definition of heavyweight?

Until Jeff pointed it out, I wasn't even aware of this scheduling "conflict" if you want to call it that, and I can assure you nobody at Hampton noticed it either. We attend each other's games only when our respective schools aren't playing.

I always thought it would be a good idea if the two schools scheduled around each other to a better degree, but neither school is humble enough to approach the other school's AD to work it out. Confused
