Pilgrim won't return to HU basketball team
The starting forward was in Kevin Nickelberry's first recruiting class.

Daily Press

Starting forward Matt Pilgrim will not return to the Hampton University basketball team next season, coach Kevin Nickelberry said.

Last season, Pilgrim averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds while starting in just 11 games for the Pirates. The 6-8, 225-pound native of Cincinnati was a member of Nickelberry's first recruiting class after he took over the Pirates' program in 2006.

Nickelberry said there would be no further comment on the matter

Not a surprise. The way he acted after the loss in the MEAC pretty much laid the groundwork for this seperation. He was a true head case who liked to be injured and hated being challenged. He truly believes he is so gifted that he could just go out and play and when he found out that there are a lot of talented players in the country he never responded by trying to work harder to get better. sorry he is leaving but it was time for him to go.

No sense in fighting it. Hampton is better and you all know it that's why you all are always trying to tear us down.

Actually no. We knew he wasn't coming back after the MEAC tournament. His actions (including doing something we all wish we could from time time)cussing out the Commish, cussing out MEAC officials, fans and trying to start a fight with the other team. He had to go and both sides knew it. No migration all other players are still here and ready to move forward.

How about you just end the speculation and state what you know.

No surprise here. Time to move on for both parties. We have some great recruits coming in next year anyway.

Still waiting to see if he is going to be the only one.

First it just reminds me about another thread. Where we talked about Hampton's recruiting classes and the fact that Bobby Collins didn't bring in big classes or "hype" names.

Looking at this situation I see that in coach Nickelberry's "Super Six" He took a flyer on two players.

Both super talented, but both with flaws. One having serious injuries the other with maturity problems.

Both players were looked at and passed over by bigger schools because the flaws were to great.

In the end they are both gone. Making that "Super Six" only four. Out that remaining four you have John Notko, Vinny Simpson, Mike Freeman and Theo Smalling.

Notko never plays. So lets make that three.

I have been told point blank that someone else might be leaving, but I'll leave it alone for now.

So just wondering we people think about that first recruiting class now?

I am excited about the future, but I thought I would be fair.

Let me be the first to offer Pilgrim a first-class Greyhound bus ticket to Aggieland, where every woman walking is pretty and classroom participation is optional Laugh

Our Aggie basketball team has been on the soft side lately. We need a hood brotha like Pilgrim to keep us strong on the boards. He'd be a poor man's Joey Dorsey (of Memphis).

I'd more than welcome his Pilgrimage to G-boro (play on words Wink)....

Actually, 2010-11. The MEAC has a 2-year wait for scholarship transfers in basketball and football, to discourage intra-conference transfers.

To all the Aggies wanting Pilgrim to transfer know he is suspect in the classroom and he will not work hard. He is by no means a thug and actually is extremely soft. Why do you think he never really met his full potential at HU.

If you think Eaves is going to take any "back talking" the way Pilgrim talked to Nickleberry you better think again.

Yeah, dude seemed like a major league a-hole. He's too cocky for DII, and if he thinks a PWC is going to take on his nonsense, he's sadly mistaken. Another talent wasted.
