Horry sets new NBA record for playoff appearances
ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 13, 2008, 11:20 PM ET

NEW ORLEANS -- Spurs forward Robert Horry set an NBA record by appearing in his 238th playoff game during Game 5 of San Antonio's series against New Orleans on Tuesday night.

Coming into the playoffs, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar held the previous record for playoff appearances with 237.

Horry, in his 16th season, has been in the playoffs in all of them, winning two championships with the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs and three with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Horry is 13th all-time in playoff minutes, over 2,000 minutes behind Abdul-Jabbar. Known for his clutch shots, Big-Shot Rob is second to Reggie Miller in 3-pointers made in the postseason.

The clutch shooting and playoff pedigree has kept Horry in the league for 16 seasons, despite scoring 7.0 points and averaging 4.8 rebounds per game in his career.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Much like Byron Scott and Danny Ainge. Big Shot Rob is a role player. He doesn't even average 10 pts per game. He's never been close to the main guy on any team he's been on.

No HOF for him, let alone first ballot.

You don't go to the Hall based on a few game winning playoff shots. Being in the playoffs in each of his 16 seasons is not his doing but being very fortunate to be on solid teams as a role player, no more no less.

Horry has had many historic moments especially in the playoffs; but he is no where close to being a NBA Hall of Famer.

Y'all are minimizing his contributions.

He has been hanging on the last couple of years with the Spurs, but he was a key contributor to the Rockets and Lakers

The Lakers don't win the third title without him
The Rockets don't win the first title without him.
The Spurs don't win that championship against the Pistons without him.

You can say that about just about every starter on every championship team. Just because you helped teams win doesn't make you a HOF.

Blue Haze using your logic Charles Barkley, Carl Malone, Patrick Ewing, and John Stockton should all be locked out of the Hall because they never won a championship.

At the same time, BJ Armstrong, John Salley, and Rick Fox should get in because they contributed to multiple titles.

I DON'T BUY IT.

I never said you had to win a championship to be in the HOF, but it does help.

Robert Horry's numbers in the playoffs are alot better than the list of role players you guys are contributing him to.

Elie is the only one of the three that is close to Horry and hitting big shots (Kerr hit one shot and Hornacek aint won nothing).

"History is not a procession of illustrious people. It's about what happens to a people. Millions of anonymous people is what history is about." - James Baldwin

" ... the United States, for generations, has sustained two parallel but opposed states of mind about military atrocities and human rights: one of U.S. benevolence, generally held by the public, and the other of ends-justify-the-means brutality sponsored by counterinsurgency specialists. Normally the specialists carry out their actions in remote locations with little notice in the national press. That allows the public to sustain its faith in a just America, while hard-nosed security and economic interests are still protected in secret. ": Robert Parry, investigative reporter and author

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

Horry will have a place in the NBA record books as long as his feat survives, but he definitely is not HOF material.........not even close!

Handicap

Hall of Famer? No
Opportunist? Yes

Will Smith is a very good role player, but how in the L can he be in the Hall of Fame? He's made some huge shots, but that doesn't qualify him for the Hall of Fame. I'd take a player who never won a ring but was a great player like Regie Miller than this guy. And this is coming from someone who was a big fan of his.

Handicap anyone who merely suggests that robert horry should be a hall of famer needs their head examined. if it took andrian dantley and art monk all these years to get voted in, horry shouldn't even be in the conversation...

You are comparing apples and oranges with the NFL HOF and the Basketball HOF. I think some of y'all need to look who is already in the Basketball HOF. There are plenty of people who are there as just contributors.

And honestly I'd take Horry over Dantley who the Pistons won the title after he was traded and then he just quit instead of playing for the Mavericks.

Kerr has 5 rings and hit some clutch shots to take down the Mavericks in 2003 in addition to the memorable one against the Jazz. Anyway, unless there is a playoff HOF, this isn't even a question. Dennis Johnson isn't in the Hall and he was a Finals MVP.

I honestly think horry would get some hof votes just because of those playoff performances. However, he does not have a body of work during the regular season and postseason to be regarded as a hall of famer. I mean mark price was one of the best clutch shooters in the history of the game and it has been hard as heck for him to get in.

You are correct, I forgot about Kerr's time with the Spurs. However, Kerr came off the bench and hit those shots in a spirt. Horry was a starter who has the record for most steals in a Championship game. He did more than just come off the bench with 5 seconds left and shoot threes.

Also, the Basketball HOF is comprised of your college, professional, coaching and contributions to the game.
