I think it's being a goalie. On ice, on skates, trying to defend the net with pucks coming at you whateve miles per hour.

I'd have to say cornerback. One on one against some of the fast athletes in sports. Gotta stay with them, not knowing where they're going exactly. Soccer goalie is difficult, when the ball is actually put on net. But that doesn't happen that often in a soccer match. A goalie might see 3-4 legit shots on net a match. And they play 90 minutes plus a game.

I disagree in football the corner will always have safety help and if the corner is playing zone coverage he doesn't rely on his ability he is only looking at the QB. i think the hardest position in anything surely is the goalie for a soccer team because the goal is O so wide and the ball comes at speed in which the body has to quickly respond to defend. Also with most players putting a spin on the ball can make it difficult to defend.

If you're in a zone only looking at the QB you will get smoked, also the CB only has Safety help in zone or double teams and not many teams run those.

BUT, Offensive line is the hardest position in football. So much pressure and so little award. For 60 plays, you can dominate on 57 of them and the world will only see the 3 you gave up.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but...

A corner DOES NOT always have safety help. There are plenty of occasions (ie. Cover 1 or Cover 0), where a corner will be on an island 1 on 1 with a receiver. He's got to pick up on "clues" from the receiver so that he can do his best to attempt to make a play on a ball, if necessary.

Cornerback is definitely the most difficult defensive position to play on the football field, I'm not quite sure if it's the most difficult defensive position in sports. However, looking at the soccer goalie logic, a goalie has defenders ahead of him. The goalie is just the last line of defense on an intricate defensive system. So, technically, in most situtations a Goalie has just as much "help" as a cornerback. Other times, just as a cornerback, the goalie is out "on an island" by himself if he is involved in a penalty kick situation.

I think it could go either way. I do believe a cornerback must be much more physically conditioned to endure sprints after sprints after sprints (not to mention having to avoid blocks and make tackles).

For mental toughness it has to be an NFL Cornerback; for physical abuse I would vote for the NFL Nosetackle.

Without a doubt it is catcher. Those guys are some tough customers behind the dish. Not only do catchers have to put with play 150 games in various weather conditions with all the squating and receiving thousands of pitches, but they are the "quarterback" of the infield.

Catchers not only have to call pitches, but the have to throw out baserunners and call defensive plays for the infielders. Plus, they have to adjust to the attributes of 12 different pitchers who throw different speeds, locations and arm slots.

Then they have to know the strenghts and weakness of their own pitchers, plus every hitter on every team. Not to mention catchers take foul balls off the body, are run into, and have to block pitches in the dirt. Oh, and then they have to contribute offensively as well.

I get was folks are saying about the DB, but a defensive back does not have nearly the responsibility a catcher does.

For alertness, I'd say hockey goalie. That puck is so small, and it's flying like a rocket, and usually you have people screening you out, resulting in just a fraction of a second to adjust and make the save.

Physically, I'd say catcher, damn, sqautting for 3 hours, that has got to be brutal.

I misread the thread, pleaz excuse me. Defensive back/cornerback is the absolute hardest position to play. Especially when there's a safety blitz on! 1 on 1 coverage.
