After seeing the Legacy Meet, it looks like it's gonna be HIU, NSU, Del State and UMES going at it.

If that's any indication, UMES and Del are gonna come with.

Apr 29, 2008

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host the Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 1-3 at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. Competition begins Thursday at 10 a.m. with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon events.

The defending Hampton Lady Pirates will compete for their third consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship and sixth overall. Junior Rachel Lewis posted a 12.63m (41-05.25 ft) mark in the triple jump and a 6.10m (25-00.25 ft) leap in the long jump to qualify for the NCAA Regional.

On the men’s side, the Norfolk State Spartans will attempt to capture their third straight outdoor title and fifth overall. Marlon Woods’ first-place long jump mark of 7.73m (25-04.50 ft) ranks 10th in the nation and a 2.15m (7-00.50 ft) leap in the high jump and 15.02m (49-03.25 ft) score in the triple jump places the sophomore among the top five in the conference for both events during the outdoor season.

Friday’s competition will begin with the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon events and will continue with field events along with the 5,000m run. Semifinal races will wrap up Friday’s action.

The MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. on the field with the men’s and women’s triple jump, men’s shot put, men’s pole vault and women’s discus. Teams will move back to the track for the 110m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 200m, and 3,000m steeple chase finals. The championship will conclude with the women’s and men’s 4x400m relays. McCorory clocks fastest collegiate 400-meter time this season

Hampton University sophomore Francena McCorory clocked the fastest collegiate 400-meter time in nation this season on Saturday, when she ran 51.54 seconds to win the event at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in Baltimore. According to the TrackShark.com - an Internet site that follows collegiate times daily - McCorory's time surpasses the previous best this season of 51.89, run by Southern California senior Carol Rodriguez two weeks ago.

McCorory came back to run a 53-second leg on the winning 1,600-meter relay team. That victory clinched the title for the Pirates, who edged Maryland-Eastern Shore 123-118 for the championship.

McCorory has run sparingly since being sidelined by a hamstring injury 15 months ago. Her return to competition was delayed by injuries suffered in a car accident in December.

She ran her first open race of the season in Baltimore on April 19, clocking a 53.80 that ranked her No. 19 in Division I prior to her run on Saturday.

"She's running injury free now and looking forward to setting some high goals the rest of the spring and summer," HU women's coach Maurice Pierce said. "She looked great in the 400 today and won by almost a second and a half."

McCorory led Bethel High to six Group AAA indoor and outdoor championships. She won the 100 and 200 outdoor titles three consecutive seasons.

^^^ If Ms. McCorory keep running like this (injury free), she is going to not only pay for that new track at HU, but also bring "world" acclaim to Hampton University.

Run Francena Run...

Hampton Women, Norfolk State Men Win 2008 Outdoor Track and Field Titles
May 3, 2008

The Hampton University Lady Pirates and Norfolk State University Spartans won the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University.

The Lady Pirates scored 123 points en route to an unprecedented six consecutive MEAC outdoor track and field title. Thumb Up Thumb Up Hampton freshman Raquel Vassell tallied 35.25 points and earned Outstanding Performer accolades. Vassell won the 100m dash (11.69), 200m dash (23.50). She also finished among the top three in the 100m hurdles (14.09), 4x100m (47.23) and 4x400m (3:40.52).

“I came into this program knowing that they had won many championships and I did not want to stop that streak, explained Vassell. “I did not finish the indoor season the way I would have liked, so I went into the outdoor season knowing I wanted to finish strong at the end.”

Head Coach Maurice Pierce was named the Outstanding Coach for the Lady Pirates. “We have a young and talented team, said Pierce. “ We made some mistakes; however that happens when you have a young team. My motto has always been quantity over quality. Our depth helped us today.”

Maryland Eastern Shore tallied 118 points to finish second. North Carolina A&T (94), Morgan State (80) and Norfolk State (76) rounded out the top five.

On the men’s side the Norfolk State men’s team posted 162 points to capture their third straight title and fifth overall. Sophomore Marlon Woods earned Outstanding Performer honors after tallying 28 total points. Woods won the long jump with a 7.95m (26-01 ft.) leap and the high jump with a 2.19 (7-02.25 ft.) jump. He was second in the triple jump with a 15.47m (50-09.25 ft.) leap.

Spartans’ Head Coach, Kenneth Giles, earned Outstanding Coaching honors. “This team had done an outstanding job. We knew early that we could win the indoor and outdoor titles and we completed one of our goals by winning the MEAC outdoor championship, said Giles. “We are looking forward to the NCAA Regional. Our next goal is to finish among the top three.”

“I have worked hard since August, explained Woods. “ It’s paying off now. I am very excited about this championship and the NCAA Regional”

North Carolina A&T posted 95 points and were runners-up to the Spartans. Hampton (76), Delaware State (70) and Morgan State (68) completed the top five.

It was a record setting day for both the men and women. Hampton’s Francena McCorory broke a meet record in the 400m dash with a time of 51.54. The previous record of 52.10 was set by Howard’s Michelle Felder in 1989. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Peter Sang set a new MEAC record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:20.07. Sang held the previous record of 9:32.08 that he posted at last’s year’s championship.

Congrats to the winners. This has been a pretty impressive run for the Hampton women, more than topping our ladies running off 4 consecutive years towards the end of the 90s. There hasn't been a streak longer than 3 years on the men's or women's side in between those two runs.

Ying Yang Norfolk State has always had a strong track and field program. Back in the early seventies Coach Dick Price won back to back divison II champinships with Seve Riddick, Larry Cuffee, Zack Rogers and Coonie Pugh. Before the Spartans enter the Meac conference, they were dominant in the CIAA. Norfolk has an rich and stories tradition in the track.
Good Job Spartans!

Really well explain why this is Hampton's 6th straight title and Coach Pierce has only been at hampton 5 years......and how quickly we forget the Lavern Sweat years at Hampton.....But since you want to throw out names look up the name Dick Price and tell me what you find. Your most "Prized" is named after a Hamptonian...... Smoke
