Jackson St. Pursues Former LSU Quarterback

Email this Story

May 9, 9:42 PM (ET)

By CHRIS TALBOTT
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -Count Jackson State in on the Ryan Perrilloux sweepstakes.

Coach Rick Comegy said he is attempting to lure the dismissed LSU quarterback to campus for a visit in hopes of signing the troubled player. Perrilloux could play right away if he decides to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision team.

"We want to be in the ballpark like everyone else who's recruiting him and see what the situation is and try to see if he fits our program and those type of things," Comegy said. "We just don't want to have to play against him."

Perrilloux was expected to take over the starting job for the defending national champions after serving as a backup to JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn the last two seasons. But a series of off-the-field problems led to his dismissal by coach Les Miles a week ago.

Perrilloux was suspended last summer after he was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. And he was involved in a nightclub fight in November, causing him to miss a game at Alabama, though he was later cleared of wrongdoing.

Miles again suspended Perrilloux in mid-February after he missed a team meeting, skipped some classes and was late for conditioning workouts. He was reinstated April 6, then let go. Miles said no specific violation led to the quarterback's dismissal.

Perrilloux is expected to finish the spring semester at LSU so he can remain eligible to play next season.

Published reports say Alabama A&M and Valdosta State also are chasing Perrilloux and Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe has told The Associated Press he's pursuing the former top prospect.

Calls to Perrilloux's mother, Bonnie Breaux, went unanswered Friday night.

Comegy has had success turning the Tigers around using transfers. Players from schools such as Ohio State, Tennessee and Mississippi State helped Jackson State win its 16th Southwestern Athletic Conference title last season, though its first since 1996. The latest transfer is former Volunteers safety Antonio Wardlow.

"I've always been a high advocate for giving a young man a second chance and seeing if he's willing to make a change," Comegy said. "I've seen it happen many, many, many times. I've had many success stories. He's a guy who has kind of a high profile now, but he's a kid who'd like to straighten things out. I'd sure like to help."

PerRyan Perrilloux, the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 Southeastern Conference Championship game between Louisiana State University and Tennessee, should have been the starting quarterback for the defending national champion LSU Tigers this fall.

rilloux: JSU doesn't need off-field issuesPerrilloux is that good in terms of football talent. He's got an NFL arm, excellent mobility and has the ability to make something out of nothing on busted plays with his quickness and his acceleration.

But instead of starting for the Bayou Bengals this fall, Perrilloux was dismissed from the LSU team last week by Head Coach Les Miles after a series of off-field issues.

The talented quarterback was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. He also was involved in a fracas at a nightclub in November, but was cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

Miles suspended Perrilloux again in mid-February after he missed a team meeting, skipped some classes and was late for a handful of conditioning workouts.

Miles said Perrilloux "didn't fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete. Ryan was given every opportunity to be a part of this football team."

Now comes word that Jackson State University is courting Perrilloux. Said JSU Head Coach Rick Comegy: "When he comes up, we hope that we represent well. We're looking forward to showing him around, showing him the academic aspects we have to offer and meeting his parents - getting to know him."

The question, it would seem, isn't how well JSU will represent its program to Perrilloux, but: How will Perrilloux represent JSU's athletic program? He just squandered a once-in-a lifetime opportunity at LSU to the point that its program washed its hands of him.

This is about more than winning. It's about recruiting "student athletes." Perrilloux has loads of athletic talent, but that shouldn't excuse off-field excesses.

Jackson State proved last year that it could win with class. Do the Tigers really need to seek out off-field problems? No.http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008805100315

Perrilloux's services in high demand
Smaller schools line up to talk to ex-LSU QB Saturday, May 10, 2008By James Varney
BATON ROUGE -- The Ryan Perrilloux era at LSU has ended, but what could be considered a secondary Perrilloux era appears to have begun.

Between 20 and 25 schools have sought permission to speak with the troubled quarterback, LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said. Bonnette declined to name the schools but said they are largely concentrated in the South and range from the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) to Division II.

At any of those schools, Perrilloux could play next fall and would not forfeit one of his remaining two years of collegiate eligibility. Still, the derby among lower divisions is an unexpected twist for the East St. John product who was considered the best offensive high school player in the country in 2004 and enrolled at LSU with the offhand boast he would, "win four Heismans."

College football teams will take chance on Ryan Perrilloux
Saturday, May 10, 2008
Aformer national high school football player of the year and rated by some the top prospect in the country, who wouldn't want to sign 6-foot-3, 230-pound quarterback Ryan Perrilloux?

What a resume. According to those who seem to know recruiting, the LSU transfer and former East St. John-Baton Rouge star is simply a "can't miss" college prospect.

On the other hand, that same player has been suspended by his team multiple times, was on the fringe of an investigation into a counterfeit ring, was caught trying to enter a casino with a false ID, missed team meetings and has been late for multiple team conditioning workouts.

Jacksonville State coach interested in Perrilloux
AP Sports
Posted: 2008-05-06 17:32:04
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe has spoken to the family of former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux about a possible transfer to an FCS team with no scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Crowe said Tuesday he also had a lengthy discussion with LSU coach Les Miles, who kicked Perrilloux off the defending national championship team after repeated off-the-field problems.

"Les was very kind to spend quite a bit of time explaining the situation to me," Crowe told The Associated Press. "He's very optimistic about him being a successful player and a successful student-athlete."

Crowe said Miles felt Perrilloux arrived with expectations to play as a freshman, but that opportunity diminished.

Perrilloux, who instead was a backup to JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn, can transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision team such as Jacksonville State without having to sit out a year. The Gamecocks' 2007 starter, Cedric Johnson, was kicked off the team after the season for violating team rules.

Two other quarterbacks left the team and another graduated. That leaves two signees, one of whom Crowe planned to grayshirt and have enroll after the 2008 season.

"We've signed a couple of good young players," he said. "This would be a natural choice for somebody that may want to move into an opportunity at quarterback."

Crowe said he was still performing his "due diligence" and hadn't talked to Perrilloux yet.

He said he had had been looking for a transfer to give the Gamecocks some experience at the position.

"I've talked with numerous possibilities," Crowe said. "We were looking. This didn't just come knock on our door. We've been looking."

Once one of the nation's top quarterback prospects, Perrilloux was suspended three times over the past year.

He was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. He also was involved in a nightclub fight in November. That caused him to miss a game at Alabama, though he was cleared of wrongdoing.

....and we would win again this year with or without Perriloux. However, this is life at JSU. Before Huhges, even Billy Joe is quoted as calling JSU the most talented team in 1-AA. We are certainly already the most talented team in 1-AA. All of our players know that the spring is tryouts and we cut those who don't seem to be making progress toward making an impact on the program and then we bring in people who can.

Comegy will always want the best players. A guy of Perrilloux's talent has to be considered. But make no mistake, JSU will repeat as SWAC champs. With or without RP. RP will simply make it easier.
