MEAC Tourney makes more strides in Raleigh

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced that the 2008 MEAC Basketball Tournament increased its attendance by more than 30 percent in the final year of its three-year agreement in Raleigh/Wake County, North Carolina. The tournament welcomed 38,228 basketball fans to the RBC Center including 8,120 attendees to Saturday's championship games.

"To more than double the tournament's attendance in three years shows continued growth and we are elated that we are able to exceed the 2007 attendance by more than 30 percent," said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas.

Great improvement!!!! Thumb Up

I think Raleigh should re-evaluate its decision to make the MEAC leave the city...it seems like the tournament is making significant strides every year.

Jut give it some more time!

I believe the economic impact from the MEAC tournament this year was only about a million dollars less than the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Raleigh this past month.

I was at the MEAC, and it was a very nice event sports-wise. But one thing the MEAC does not do a good job of is promoting events on campuses and to alumni.

There were very few students there outside of the North Carolina area, and the same went for alumni. If the MEAC wants to get CIAA money and recognition, they have to step up the caliber of its ancillary events and flood the market with promotion.

I hope we can stay in Raleigh, even without the concessions to allow the tourney to grow. Once they start marketing on campus, this think could be huge.

Seems like more schools are beginning to support this event.

The same way the MEAC does it, by over estimation.

i think the attendance figures are accurate. after all, i would think that the rbc center provides the attendance figures since they control the turnstiles.

but what i want to know is why is it taking so long to announce next year's site. the tourney is less than a year away and clearly norfolk is strongly in support of hosting it. the only logical reason for the delay that i can think of is maybe raleigh had a change of heart and the commish is negotiating another year there. otherwise, norfolk is a no brainer. the commish needs to put all speculation to rest and announce that we're bringing the show to spartan country...

I believe Commish Thomas thinks there is no rush to make a decision on the tournament location.

Well, maybe the Raleigh RBC folks are waiting to see if The MEAC Presidents will do the correct smart thing, and quickly vote NCCU back into the MEAC, at the MEAC's 2008 Spring meeting.

Just my personal opinion, nothing official.

If NCCU is voted back into the MEAC, at the 2008 May Meeting, and if the MEAC is smart again next year, and allows another NCCU vs. WSSU Bonus MEAC Tournament Game, the Numbers will really expand again, with many more NCCU Fans, who will become more use to, and will plan for that expected match-up.

Plus, NCCU's Basketball Team will show much more improvement for next year. NCA&T and WSSU should be much better, as well.

What do the rest of you think?

Take Care!
