One of my friends in Abuja, Nigeria has asked me to help him invest in a McDonalds franchise. To date, there are no McDonalds or American fast food chains in the country. However, the fast food restaurant industry in Nigeria is growing at a rapid pace. I have no doubts that the "golden arches" is an extremely lucrative. opportunity. Here is the dilema.

I have MAJOR issues with McDonalds Corporation's buiness practices, unhealthy food...you name it. I do know that if I don't do it, someone else wil do so and make $1 million.

Any thoughts?

GO WITH YOUR CONSCIENCE ...

If you can't sleep at night over this - or ANY decision - I would think twice.

I checked out "SuperSize Me" on the tube last week (A movie that showed a guy who ate McD's for 30 straight days), and I have to admit that it has not only kept me away from the joint, but has had me reconsidering my choices for lunch lately - even though I wasn't going there anyway.

I fell asleep on "Mad Money" just last night when he was talking about ethical investing and investing in ATF companies (alcohol, obacco, and firearms), and from what little I did see it seemed he was basically taking the "money first" approach, so although this sounds like this could set you up for life, I would look in the mirror and ask myself if I can live with the decision.

FTR - The guy in the movie gained 24 pounds, his cholesterol level went up 60 points, and his liver (or kidney) was reduced to fat). I think it took him months to get his body & vitals back to his original state before the experiment.

This is hard.

I personally would do it, if I had the opportunity.

I agree with everything Venom said. But in a way, I think the consumer should be held totally responsible for their actions. No one has ever held a gun to my head and told me to to into a McDonald's. Everyone knows that any excessive consumption of any fast food is not healthy. So I don't know.

i can say this, however: if we were always 100% socially aware, then many of these businesses would be inappropriate. Many mutual funds invest in some type of tobacco or alcohol companies. Many invest in fast food companies.

Contact McDonalds and find out why there are not any franchises in Nigeria and if there are any restrictions.

If you control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do. If you make a person feel that he/she is inferior, you do not have to compel him/her to accept an inferior status, he/she will seek for it. If you make a person think he/she is a justly outcast, you do not have to order that person to the back door, that person will go without being told, and if there is no back door, the very nature of that person will demand one. - Carter G.
