The District is Registering for Mayor Fenty's Summer Youth Program
2007 program focuses on career development opportunities


( Washington , D.C. ) The Department of Employment Services is now registering District youth for the 2007 Summer Youth Program (SYP). This year, the program is expected to serve 11,000 youth, ages 14 to 21, in academic enrichment and work experience activities.



The 2007 summer program, with the theme "Young Workers...Future Leaders," will operate for six weeks beginning Monday, June 25 and ending Friday, August 3, 2007. Youth will be assigned to District and Federal government agencies as well as non-profit organizations, for 20 or 30 hours per week based on their age, and will earn the federal training wage of $5.15 per hour. Additionally, youth who compete for positions in the private and federal sector may work 20 and 40 hours a week and earn up to $10 per hour.

Applications for the summer program may be picked up from the Department's Office of Youth Programs, located at 625 H Street, N.E. , Washington , D.C. or it can be downloaded from the Department's web site at www.does.dc.gov and click on Youth Services. Applications must be returned in person to the Office of Youth Programs on or before Friday, April 27, 2007. During summer registration, the Office will be open Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
