One of the ironies of credit. To get good high numbers you have to have credit instruments available to you (cards, loans). Then the key is to use them sparingly. You can't have a record of how reliable you are when using credit, if you don't use credit.

An easy thing to do is to use one credit card for gasoline purchases only. Listen, only buy gasoline on that card. Then have that card paid automatically from your bank account each month. If you fill up 4X a month at $30. Then have an automatic $120 sent to the credit card each month. You get a report that shows you always pay on time. You look trustworthy and reliable and don't even have to buy stamps!

Exactly Thumb Up Thumb Up

also, it's good to have a lot of different tradelines. Some people think that they have good credit because they don't have any credit cards, but they have a car loan or they pay their bills on time. However, you must have revolving credit, installment accounts are not nearly enough. Many parents do their kids a grave injustice of telling them that credit cards are bad. So as college students, they avoid getting credit cards. When they graduate, they are kicking themselves in the head because now, it's hard to get credit cards. My brother is 24, and has never had a credit card. I am 26 and have had dang near 25 in my life. Early on, I had a couple of lates. but I have been darn near perfect on paying them. My only dings have been medical collections and cell phone collections, and I have methodically gotten rid of most of those. On another note: I added my 4 month old son to 3 of my credit cards. By the time he is 18, his credit will be ridiculously good, because he will have an 18 year credit history, and thousands of dollars in credit. My good deeds will pass on to him. So I'd advise anyone responsible to add their child as an authorized user on your cards. but only the cards with good payment history. Thumb Up

Crown, try with a Bank of America Secured card Thumb Up

Your case is exactly what I am talking about. It is harder to get credit the older you get without having credit.

Bro, tell me about it. I am about to start working on my Ed.S degree in the spring. Then I am going to work on my Ed.D. I have about $50K right now, but then I'll have about $80-90K. I'm not sweating it though. The Ed.S will increase my salary about $8K a year, the Ed.D will increase it about another $8K. So the increase in pay should pay for itself within 4 years. But I won't lie, I know so many people drowning in student loan debt, it is unreal. I personally believe student loan debt is bad. it was ok when it was 3%. But now at 7%, it is like a mortgage. My wife and I have a plan to pay about $1500-2000 a month on our loans. They should be paid off within 10 years.

But Triple, to answer your question, student loan debt really doesn't hurt your credit scores. Unless you have 30-60-90 day lates, THEN it will hurt you. I believe it doesn't matter how much you have in student loans, it won't really hurt your credit too much.

Dude if you haven't consolidated think on it...unless you have some that are farely low then what you can do is bite the bullet and either pay them off or get a low interest 5% loan and pay off the 8%. The difference a bank loan and a Sallie Mae loan is the way payments are handled.

Sallie Mae takes excess payments and puts them in a non-appreciating escrow account (oh it appreciates for them just not you so in other words the lagniappe you add to your monthly is just sitting in an account doing nothing) They leave that money there until you add up enough extra payments to equal one full payment. Which means Sallie Mae does not allow you to reduce your average daily balance.

A Bank Loan would allow you to pay extra thereby reducing your Avg Daily Balance and overall finance charges because any extra would be immediately applied to the principal.

Thanks Thumb Up I looked into it somewhat before, but I didn't know the full details. Thanks again!

Just be careful about balances carried on cards where you have added your kids. Otherwise they could be 18 and show up with $$,$$$ of your debt compared against their income.

I think QueKaa put me on to it. Since I joined, my credit is now ridiculous Crazy Crazy. I'm getting approved for cards left and right. Got approved on the spot today for American Express. Also, got $20,000 in credit limit increases in the past week Thumb Up

I put this here because no one will read it in the business section. We all need to be informed of certain things going on with the banks. We all need to know how to work things in our advantage. For instance, I never knew it was actually silly to pay off a collection account. Now I know it is. If you can cut out 30 minutes a day on mf.com and spend it on cb.com, you will NOT regret it. What up Shine.....

I guess I don't understand the need to have such a high credit to income ratio? When I graduated college I didn't have a credit card but had no problem getting an unsecured card once I started working. The only credit I had at the time was my student loan. Also I had no problem getting approved for my 1st home loan ($85,000) with only a student loan debt of $10,000 and a $500 credit card. Since then I have purchased a second home and I was approved to borrow up to $250,000 with no problems what so ever. I always told that having to much credit was consider a bad risk to the lender.

Nope. My score's in the 900 series from all 3 credit bureaus. And I make it a rule to pay my stuff off and on time unless a compelling personal circumstance nixes it.
