I need y'all help. I've been on webites in the past and they have been able to identify what state of city I live in w/o my giving them that information. They tailor an ad based on my locale. Or even worse, they tell me what IP address I'm searching from.

I'm guessing there's some type of cookie or other thing that they are able to send to my computer to get that info.

What can I do to stop that?

Have you scanned your computer for spyware and adware? I've found that one of the best scanner and "killers" is Microsoft's new scan software. I've use some of the more popular ones and re-scan with that and danged if it doesn't find it.

I've also found that there are some of those nasties that are very adept at hiding and you JUST FLAT OUT AINT GONE FIND EM.

That's when you get tricky-dicky an go stop the processes.

Start/msconfig/processes/

Stop the ones you don't recognize as needing to run your puter. Wink

Take that you sneaky spyware suckers. Mad

I've used AdAware SE and Spy Sweeper. For some reason Spybot cannot download the new definitions.

I'm not thay savvy re: the PC lingo. I'm guessing from the Start Menu you want me to go to RUN and then type in msconfig. From there I should go to the processes tab? I don't have a tab that says "Processes?" HELP!!!!

I'll pay for lunch if you'll help me out. I can bring my broke up 'puter.

I think she means do CTRL/ATL/Delete (same time) and then go to the "processes" tab.

Oh yeah. I forgot I changed operating systems to XP. That was the "old way". Thanks Jag. hulaw, try the Microsoft one first. It's free (in Beta) on the microsoft site. It's called Windows Defender and is on the "Popular Downloads" section in Beta 2 version.

You can also try clearing out your cookies!

Open IE and click on tools then options. Now click on Delete Files. Place a click in "Delete all offline content" and click on okay.

Update:

I've run Defender (both quick and full scan).
I've cleaned out my cookies, caches both off and online.

I do have 58 processes running right now and the only programs I have open are: Firefox, IE, Nortons Internet Security and Anti Virus. I'm guessing that I shouldn't have 58 different things running, but I don't have a clue what to stop. HELP!!!
