I'm on the market for a new mountain bike. It's been a while since I purchased a bike. I didn't want to spend over $500. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

You can do okay with $500 at: http://www.performancebike.com/ But you have to leave DC to find one. There are shops in Maryland and Virginia near metro stops.

With $500 you can't get anything new at most real bike shops in DC. However big wheels is one of the few places that sells high quality used bikes: http://www.bigwheelbikes.com/usedbikes.htm

If you haven't purchased a serious bike in years - then DON'T buy off of ebay. Go in to a shop and get educated for your own safety. As annoying as you are I wouldn't want you to get hurt.

Once you feel man enough, you should try to take on this: http://www.bikewashington.org/trails/rockcreek/dc2.htm

Thumb Up

Tell you the truth when you walk into a store in DC and say $500, folks are going to look at you funny and suggest that you start at 8. I know because that is the number I used 2 years ago.

I am full aware of the price of new bikes in the City. I'm not purchasing anything "new" because it's just not in the budget. Additionally, $800+ is too much to spend on a any kind of bike. A quality used mountain bike would suffice.

RE: Rock Creek Trail

Been there done that. Let me know when you are ready to do that trail that goes from Hyattsville to Takoma Park.

My bike cost me around $300-400, and I can ride both street and off road. It's one of the 'tweeners I guess, but it does the trick.

I went to a professional bike shop here, told them what I was going to need the bike for, then they gave me some options.

They had the real expensive bikes, as well as some of the lower end bikes, but even they were at around $250 minimum.

What is Rock Creek like? I may be there this summer with my bike.

It is flat and hilly with a few blind curves.

But I do like riding through Rock Creek Park.

In the summer, it can crowded with bikers joggers and folks strolling adn walking dogs.

But if you pay attention, riding through RC is fun.

Cool. Sounds like a nice place to ride. Thumb Up

Maybe we can all get our bikes and go for a ride while I'm there.

I don't think a high performance bike is needed for me. In terms of physical activity, I'm pretty active. Boxing is my new love. I just started taking pilates classes. I'm definitely feeling that too.

I will use my bike primarily for riding to the gym (1.92 miles each way) and trails. Last year, I only did trails every other weekend. would like to purchase a lesser expensive bike so that I can use the extra money to purchase a kayak.

DK-

When will you be in DC?

You can get a good bike for around $400, if that's what you need it for. I LOVE my bike.

Oh, I'll be there the June 16th weekend.

Bicycles.

You bought a bicycle for $69.99? Handicap

That won't last long. You need something more durable. The SEAT on my bike would run about $50. LOL

The only shocks on that bike would be the air in the tires.

Kickin 90's,

Bicycling is a big sport. From the occasional biker to the professionals, those bikes can be as expensive as you need them to be. From your standard shocks on the frame, to the ones on the seat and handle bars, there are so many upgrades that it would have your head spinning.

You should go into a pro bike shop one day and see for yourself.

Oh, and that bike that you have could give you the rhoids if you aren't careful. LOL

Some bikes (like cars) look better sitting in the showroom as opposed to being attached to a monthly payment in my garage. LOL
