...any time soon

By Lauran Neergaard, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Meat and milk from cloned animals is as safe as that from their counterparts bred the old-fashioned way, the Food and Drug Administration said today.

The decision removes the last U.S. regulatory hurdle to marketing products from cloned cows, pigs and goats, and puts the FDA in concert with European food regulators and several other nations.

"The data show that healthy adult clones are virtually indistinguishable" from their counterparts, concludes FDA's 900-plus page safety report.

But for economic reasons, it will be years before many foods from cloned animals reach store shelves. At $10,000 to $20,000 per animal, they're a lot more expensive than ordinary cows.

In addition, several large food companies have said they won't sell milk or meat from cloned animals because of consumer anxiety about the technology.

With FDA's ruling, "If you ask what's for dinner, it means just about anything you can cook up in a laboratory," said Carol Tucker-Foreman of the Consumer Federation of America, who pledged to push for more food producers to shun cloned animals.

The two main U.S. cloning companies, Viagen Inc. and Trans Ova Genetics, already have produced more than 600 cloned animals for U.S. breeders, including copies of prize-winning cows and rodeo bulls.

I'm with NSU Alum.

How could they have come to the conclusion that it's perfectly safe? They couldn't have possibly done any long term studies on it yet. And if they are "virtually indistinguishable" from other meats, why would anyone want to pay so much more for it?

As long as they put it in a special place-like over beside the "organic" isht, then they can have it. Give me Besty the Barnyard Beast with no pedigree and I'm happy. Happier when she's been barbequed.

Thing is, how do we know that it's not already on the shelves. We know how the fed is notoriously late on telling us about things that have already been out for months...

Just like with their other genetic "experiments" (currently ongoing), we won't know until it's too late, if then. A "brave new world"? I think not. Thumb Down

Before I forget:

I've met and worked with many smart, honest, and ethical people from the FDA. The only problem is that the FDA is a political animal just like any other institution in our "gummit". Therefore, the people making the key/final decisions are the ones that often need a smack in the dayum head and some friggin' accountability put into their arses.

Yes, you should not get carried away with whatever. No one that I am aware of said they were better, nor even different. The term "RepubliKKKan types" defines a genre that is best exemplified by the current Crime Syndicate in power. No one does it better nor better defines their ilk than them. There is plenty of room for many so-called Democrats, Republicans, etc. at the table of depravity. Light Smoke

Laugh

Man, y'all have been eating cloned food products for YEARS.

And ahh.... there is absolutely NO difference between cloned milk and milk from an artificially inseminated cow. NONE AT ALL.

Just like there is NO difference between the flesh of a cloned cow and that of an artificially inseminated cow. NONE AT ALL.

You think because the word "Cloned" was included in this article that you have some reason to freak. Well, [b]your freaking should be reserved for the growth hormone and antibiotics that they pump into cattle... substances which we KNOW have deleterious effects on human health. You should NOT freak out over the fact that the eggs were fertilized in some test tube.

ALL of the beef and beef products that you consume come from eggs fertilized in a test tube right now!

The difference betweened cloned animals and the ones you currently consume is instead of frozen sperm from an artificial twin prized bull, the egg is fertilized with a somatic cell nucleus from from that SAME bull.

Big deal?

No... it isn't.
