Sister Study:Calling all HBCU's

JOHNIENE’S STORY

When Johniene Thomas of Nashville, TN read about the Sister Study from an email she received from BlackAmericaWeb, she knew she had to join. Her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. As Education Coordinator for the Department of Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College and co-host of a weekly radio show called “Health Watch” on Fisk University’s WFSK 88.1FM, Johniene understands how instrumental HBCUs can be in increasing awareness of medical research studies which can help reduce the health disparities for blacks in America.

Johniene says, “For whatever reason we seem to be vulnerable when it comes to breast cancer. The way we can beat it, at present, is early detection. I think we have the upswing on that, but what I’d like to know is “Why has breast cancer become so highly prevalent among us?” I believe the Sister Study and others studies like it will unlock this mystery for us. We’ve got to become more actively involved in areas that most significantly impact or affect us and our well-being. No need to leave it to someone else to do or to take care of us. We can do it ourselves for ourselves. I ask you to join the thousands of us taking a stand against breast cancer! I double-dare you!!”

Let’s Keep Giving!

The Tom Joyner Foundation is a strong supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). You may be wondering what HBCUs have to do with breast cancer. Today’s youth are counting on us to do everything we can to prevent diseases that may infringe upon their goals for a healthy tomorrow. Beyond the holiday season, give a gift that will benefit generations to come.

The Sister Study is calling upon all Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S., urging them to help spread the word to black women about a landmark research effort to find the causes of breast cancer.

We challenge all HBCU alumni to get involved in the Sister Study. If you are eligible, please JOIN ! You can urge your fellow classmates to get involved. Request materials to share at upcoming class reunions and other social gatherings. Contact the Sister Study for information to include in newsletters or on your class website. Helping is as easy as forwarding this email to your family and friends!
