This article? (may require you to register)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20...oreheadlines&sub=new

"The President once boasted that with his pals in the oil industry, he would be able to keep prices low," said Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Judiciary Committee. "Instead, it is his pals in the oil industry who have benefited."

Five oil company executives held up their right hands and swore to tell the truth at the hearing, which also included ConocoPhillips and the U.S. subsidiaries of BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell.

Oil company executives repeated a familiar mantra that crude oil markets - not profiteering at the gasoline pump - is the prime reason behind high prices.

"As repetitive and uninteresting as it may sound, the fundamental laws of supply and demand are at work," said John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Company.

U.S. crude oil futures hit a record $130.47 a barrel on Wednesday, and have risen sixfold since 2002 as surging demand in China and other developing economies strained supplies.

That hasn't stopped Democrats in the Senate from pursuing punitive measures like higher taxes aimed specifically at the five companies who appeared at the hearing.

Whoa!!! PP I like your link much better!!!

“It strikes me that this is the right situation for a president to step in, for a president of the United States to step in,” Mr. Durbin (Richard Durbin, D-Illinois) said. “The president of the United States goes to Saudi Arabia and begs the sheiks, ‘Please release more oil, you are killing the American economy.’ They told him to take a hike. They sent him home empty-handed. I think the president should be calling you all before his little meeting place, the White House, and talking about what you are doing to the American economy.” Eeker

Tell 'em why you mad, Senator!!

Keep that picture and post it at the end of the summer. There will be a thread started by somebody saying "Remember when gas was only 4 dollars?" Crazy

$4.08 a gal for regular up the street from me last night. That morning it was $3.85...

BTW, while y'all complaining about the oil companies (and rightly so), you may want to channel some of the anger at the unregulated Hedge Fund managers. Do a little homework and maybe you'll see who's really pushing up the price of oil... Wink

Oh... and a little reprieve... night before last, I filled up at a BP station whose sign had regular posted for $3.87 a gal for regular. When I started pumping, the price on the pump was $3.83 a gal. They hadn't changed the prices in the pumps yet! Thumb Up

I blame the government for allowing the oil companies to merge and American companies trying to make more money by having everything made in China, now they are consuming oil like its nobody's business.

Just heard Harold Ford Jr quote someone else who reminded him that the day the war started oil was 24.00 a barrel. If there was no war would there still be this crisis?

Unlike some people whose paths I cross, I still count my blessings in spite of. I'm not so spoiled and naive as to think that these kind of life events can't happen. And, I ain' gonna cry over what I can't control...

The difference between us and them is that most of these cities have the necessary public transportation infrastructure so their citizens don't have to depend on their cars. And they don't have a love of the gas-guzzlers like us Americans. True it costs more for them, but they're not as dependent.

Confused

So, let me get this right... Since "we" CHOSE to live outside of the reach of public transportation, and CHOSE to buy and drive gas-guzzlers for daily transportation, somehow "we" should not suffer the effects of rising fuel costs? Nor, change the way we go about our daily living as it relate to fuel consumption??

I don't know about anyone else here, but if I gotta change my standard of living (which I CHOSE to live) for the survival of my family, with no way to control the forces that dictate the change, then no amount of whining and crying about is going to affect anything...

A daily prayer for me and countless others:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can
;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.

Amen.

Just keeping it real... Wink

Good stats Tech!

I have a 2007 Ford Focus. Since the high gas prices, prices of used vehicles are going up. I'm about to sell my car and we'll be a 1 car family at least for the summer. I'm trying to get a teaching gig close to my home or my wife's school so we can function on 1 car. If not, I am going to just buy a paid-for beater.
