Ladies of the new generation,

What will your grandkids say they wish you would cook when they get older?

Will they have fond memories of your cooking as we do of our granny's ole skool cooking? or Will they remember Pizza Hut, BK Lounge, or Mickey D's the most?

Judging from some of the responses in the other thread about women of the new millenium and cooking, we should have some interesting responses!

Why not refine the question to reflect today's society?

That would include grandaddy, since these days there are some men who are not too lazy or too afraid to demonstrate their cooking skills. Thumb Up

I think it is reflected to today's women who no longer have cooking skills that their mothers and grandmothers had. Let me emphasize NOT ALL of today's women.

I'm probably one of the few people in my age group that actually cook. I'm talking about granny-style, down home, deep up in the woods cooking. My daughter and a few folks on MF can vouch that I "put it down" in the kitchen.

This past Sunday, I made made callaloo soup. Typically, I use dasheen leaf to make my soup. This time, I used both dasheen leaf and Jamaican callaloo. The ingredients are fresh thyme, garlic cloves (fresh), ginger root, anise, coconut oil, scotch bonnet pepper, coconut milk, sea salt, addobo and okra.

You put the chopped leaves in the stock pot with the fresh thyme, garlic, ginger root, anise, and some coconut oil, sea salt and adobo.. Boil it for a a couple hours until the leave get tender. Afterwards, I throw in the scotch bonnet pepper for about 10-15 minutes. (It all depends on how "ripe' the pepper is.) You don't want the pepper to over power the taste of the soup. Once it is ready, I add the chopped okra and cook it until it's tender.

When it is all done, I drain what little juice there is and remove the thyme stems and ginger root. Then, I put all the greens in the blender. Blend it with coconut milk until it's nice and smooth (puree). Pour the soup back in the pot and serve.

I cook but nothing like the women of old... I can hold my own with a few dishes I think my grandkids would enjoy like lasagna, jambalya. My family likes my food but to my son, nothing beats McD's. As much as I loved my family's cooking, nothing beat McD's for me either when I was young!

Just like me with my grannies, my grandkids will be asking for fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, pound cake, etc. There aren't too many dishes I can't cook from down home to gourmet. My godkids came down a few weeks ago and when they saw my mom, they said to her, I quote, "auntie can cook, she can throw down in the kitchen, her fried chicken would run Popeye's out of business."

I think I'm gonna be sick from imagining myself eating ALL that at one time.

Nice burning.

Just some examples as to my cooking abilities.

I always balance my meal with lots of veggies and grains and an cocasional starch.

I am not trying to be a diabetic or keel over from hypertension.

Seeing that is reason enough to imagine. Then again, I'm used to that seeing my mom and aunts on both sides burn.
