is it okay to punch children? this past weekend, my cousin punched her 4 year old in the arm for having a tantrum. i thought she was kidding when she said, "come here and let me punch you." i was like WOW!

I don't agree with punching, but a couple of swats on the @zz would work if I'd told them once or twice to calm down.

A punch in the arm is alot better than a switch, high heel shoe, yardstick, coat hanger... My fault, having flashbacks.

Punching IS NOT COOL!!! You need to check ya cousin!!!

There are other things that you can do to punish a 4 year old, instead of punching the kid. I'd hate to see what your cousin does to discipline the child when no one is around.

no, i dont. i am sure she isnt physically abusing the child. punching him just seemed to be over the top.

Did the punch work? I say it depends on how hard the punch was.

If the arm didn't fall off, and the child stopped doing it, then it was effective.

I would rather have been punched a couple of times on my arm than beat 20 times with a switch. Being as though I was a good son, I didn't have to worry about either that much.

NSU Alum, it's still your place to step to her and voice your concerns. It's up to her to accept or reject it. If she does the latter, then you've still done your part. Your side of the street is clean...

Some of these bad kids need more than a punch. Maybe the jail cells wouldn't be filled to capacity if more of them got punched by their weak parents.

I hear ya. Maybe at a later time, but definitely not at the occurrence of the assault. Clearly, she was annoyed with the little boy and me butting in could have possibly escalated the situation. As a parent, I know that unsolicited advice on parenting isn't always received well.

beating your child like a drum doesnt get the job done. the problem is that some parents only want to hit and beat on their children. there is more to parenting than using using your child a punching bag.

Whipping a child only works when the parents are responsible themselves. Whipping a child for being fresh doesn't work if the momma/daddy is bringing home a different person every night ya dig?

A "punch?" She would have had to catch me. My parents had to station themselves strategically to catch me for punishment.

They never hit hard. In fact I barely felt anything; it was my pride they hurt. The after-whopping talk made me feel worse (I knew better than to . . . )

Hell, I was allergic to asswhoopins when I was a kid.
