SC State University’s Presidential Search Committee chairman, Maurice G. Washington, today, announces the names of three finalists for the presidency of the SC State University.

The finalists whose names were forwarded to the SC State University Board of Trustees, by the Search Committee for consideration, in alphabetical order, are:

JOHNSON O. AKINLEYE, Ph.D., currently the associate vice chancellor for academic programs at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington;

GEORGE E. COOPER, Ph.D., currently the deputy administrator, for Science and Education Resources Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture;

JUANITA P. FAIN, Ph. D., currently the vice president for planning at the University of Nevada, (Las Vegas).

“I sincerely thank each and every member of SC State’s Presidential Search Committee for their commitment, dedication, and professionalism,” Washington stated. “The members were fully engaged in the process from the beginning, and have now, handed off to the Board of Trustees, three very capable presidential finalists,” he continued.

Last week, the five candidates met with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members during their visits to SC State’s campus. With the assistance of feedback received from SC State’s stakeholders, the search committee was able to decide on the three finalists to be forwarded to the Board for consideration.

Washington continued his praise of the search committee, by saying the individuals who serve, have ensured that the search process was "fair and open, but most importantly transparent.”

"From the onset, we, the Board, charged the search committee with being above board, and without exception, and they have done as requested. Now, we, the SC State Board of Trustees must complete the most important task of a governing body, which is to appoint a president, and we intend to do just that.”

As I will continue to say, our future is brighter than our past,” Washington concluded.

It is the expectation that the newly appointed president will take office on July 1, 2008.

Information about the search process can be found at www.scsu.edu.

I don't like these candidates, on first glance. I vote for starting over.

What does one have to do with the other? I am a FAMU graduate, does that automatically qualify me to be the president of SCSU?

I like the resume of Howard's new prexy. 13 years experience as president of Bowling Green. I like Dr. Ammons resume, president of North Carolina Central. I prefer that SCSU hire someone who has successfully run a college or university.

Hey, but if your only requirement is FAMU graduate, my nephew graduates in August. He might be interested.

Who in the hell said anything about our "only requirement is FAMU graduate". Stop putting words in peoples mouth. I was just surprised that you wouldn't be supportive of an alumni of your school that's a finalist at another MEAC school. I see that you're to much of an arsehole to realize what I was saying.

Hey, don't get mad at me because you got caught trippin'.

The point here is that HBCUs are at one of the most precarious times in our history. The outlook of our being able to go forward as predominately Black institutions, under the direction and control of Black administrators is tenuous.

It is critical that the Black administrators we hire today be highly qualified to lift us to higher levels of research production, student retention and endowment building, so that our relevancy and sustainability is not continously questioned.

Because I hold these beliefs, I prefer the new prexy at SCSU be an experienced university head with demonstrated performance on these and other key issues. My beliefs are also the reason I like the Howard and FAMU hires.

So even though the current pool includes my RATTLER brother, there should be no surprise that I prefer starting over.

Blah, blah, blah.........FAMU hired Humphries as a person with experience as a University President and that didn't work out very well now did it? SCSU is looking for a proven leader in the Business and Academic world, not some retread looking to move up in the the HBCU world.

A very uninformed statement. And that's pretty sad. Frowner

"The media want to maintain their intimate relation to state power. They want to get leaks, they want to get invited to the press conferences. They want to rub shoulders with the Secretary of State, all that kind of business. To do that, you've got to play the game, and playing the game means telling their lies, serving as their disinformation apparatus." - Noam Chomsky

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State." - Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945
