The Fort Valley State Educational Talent Search Program received five grant awards for several of its middle school students through the Tiger Woods "Start Something" Program.
Two students from Fort Valley Middle School received grants. They were Charleston Lyons, $2,000, and Yala Jordan, $3,000, both seventh-graders. Three students from Macon County Middle School received grants. They were seventh-grader Jim Gary $1,950, and eight-graders Oneisha Gary $2,000, and Obryan Shelley $2,200. The students received a total of $11,150 in grant awards.
Students at Fort Valley Middle School, Byron Middle School and Macon County Middle School participated in the project during workshop sessions conducted by Retha Ezell, FVSU Educational Talent Search academic field representative. All students completed six units of study in the areas of character development, volunteer services and career exploration. The students completed individual volunteer projects and three to four hours of community service.
The Tiger Woods "Start Something" Program is a national educational program available to any student ages 8 to 17. Developed by Target and the Tiger Woods Foundation, the program was inspired by the book "Start Something," written by the late Earl Woods, Tiger Woods’ father. The Tiger Woods "Start Something" Program helps to inspire and guide youth to achieve their dreams, make a difference in their community and realize their potential one step at a time.
