HU Hosts Navy and Engineering Group to Announce Scholarships

Hampton, VA -In an effort to continue to diversify the engineering field, an announcement of scholarships for engineering students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MIs) will be made at Hampton University Wednesday, March 28 at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Center Cyber Lounge.

Vice Admiral Paul E. Sullivan, Commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Myron Hardiman, executive director of Advancing Minorities in Engineering (AMIE), will announce more than $80,000 in scholarship funds for engineering students attending HBCU/MIs.

Sullivan will present the scholarship money to AMIE who will offer the scholarships to engineering students at select HBCU/MIs. Hardiman will accept the offer on AMIEs behalf.

"We are facing a drastic shortage of naval engineers and other skilled workers and are competing with industry and other disciplines for the best and brightest young people," said Sullivan. "It is now a business imperative to recruit a diverse workforce, and this scholarship money is a solid investment in the future of the U.S. Navy and Naval Sea Systems Command."

"NAVSEA's interest in our schools is recognition of the contributions of African American engineers - military and civilian - to the nation's safety and security over many years," said Dr. Eric Sheppard, dean for Hampton University's School of Engineering and Technology.

While on campus, visiting dignitaries will participate in a School of Engineering and Technology presentation followed by a tour of the engineering labs and campus. Also expected to be present is Dr. Eugene DeLoatch, dean for the School of Engineering at Morgan State University.

Engineering has been a part of Hampton’s curriculum since 1985 and the chemical and electrical components were accredited in 1992. The School of Engineering and Technology was created in 1995 and is one of 10 HBCUs to have an accredited engineering program.
