U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham announced Tuesday that South Carolina State University will receive two grants totaling $450,000 to bolster the school’s rehabilitation counseling programs.

S.C. State will receive a $350,000 grant to offer a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling via distance education to individuals who are currently employed by state vocational rehabilitation counseling programs. The school estimates that during the five-year grant period, a minimum of 60 professionals will earn these advanced degrees.

In addition, S.C. State will receive a $100,000 grant to help provide specialized training for rehabilitation counseling program students in the orientation and mobility certificate program. O&M graduates are equipped to work with individuals who are blind or have vision impairments.

The O&M program at S.C. State was the first in the nation established at a Historically Black College or University.

The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
