HU Computer Security Symposium to Feature State Technology Sec.
Hampton, VA - Computer security issues being raised daily and community worries with Internet security will be discussed at Hampton University's Department of Computer Science 3rd annual Information Assurance Symposium on Monday, April 9 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The theme of the symposium is "Building Information Assurance Capacity and Improving Infrastructure at Minority Serving Institutions." Aneesh Chopra, secretary of technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will be the morning's guest speaker. He will discuss computer security and other technology issues in Virginia. Chopra is currently Virginia's fourth secretary of technology. He leads the Commonwealth's strategy to effectively leverage technology in government reform, promotes Virginia's innovation agenda, and fosters technology-related economic development with a special emphasis on entrepreneurship. "Information assurance is a topic that transcends computer science and impacts everyone in a technological society," said Robert Willis, computer science professor and symposium planner. The morning session will open with a greeting by Dr. Jean Muhammad, chair of the computer science department, followed by an introduction of the day's presenters before Chopra's message. Some of the afternoon presenters and their respective topics include: Daniel J. Ryan, professor of systems management at the National Defense University, will address public policy and law in cyberspace; Hampton's own Dr. Yen-Hung Hu, assistant computer science professor, will engage the audience on possible ways to detect and prevent attacks before they reach the victims; and Timothy Summers of the National Security Agency will introduce information security and discuss ways better educate students on a variety of computer science areas. The luncheon speaker is Dr. Corey Schou, director of both the National Information Assurance Training and Education Center and the Simplot Decision Support Center and a member of the Idaho State University Faculty.
