Changes for the 2007-08 School Year

1. Dress Code: It is our mission to educate and better prepare our students for successful professional careers. To that end, beginning in the Fall we are implementing a business casual dress code for the campus. Between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday- Thursday, students will no longer be allowed to wear jeans, gym shoes, flip flops, pajama bottoms, shorts, sweatshirts, sweatsuits, halter tops, or shirts without collars outside of their dormitories. Students who fail to adhere to this policy will not be (1) allowed to attend class or (2) served in the cafeteria. The only exception to this rule is on Fridays. Fridays will be “Paul Quinn Pride Days”. Students will be permitted to wear jeans and shorts if they are wearing Greek or school paraphernalia. We are in the process of collecting clothing items in order to assist our students who may not have the necessary items to comply with this change. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact our Vice President of Student Affairs, Ms. Cynthia Marshall-Biggins at 214-302-3532.

Man - this guy is cracking some knuckle head skulls. We need to send him to half of our schools to get kid's ch!t straight Thumb Up

2. Mandatory Class Attendance: We are in the process of strengthening the academic requirements of the College. Accordingly, class attendance is now mandatory. We believe mandatory class attendance will provide you with the greatest opportunity to adjust to the more stringent academic requirements. Students are permitted only two excused absences per class, per semester. If a student exceeds this number, they will be docked a full letter grade for every unexcused absence.

4. Class Withdrawal Policy: Beginning with the Fall semester, students will only be permitted to withdraw from classes during the first two weeks of each semester.

5. THEA Exam: Per the guidelines of our existing policies, every student must attain a passing score on the THEA exam prior to what constitutes as their junior year. If a student fails to achieve a passing score prior to the first semester of their junior year, they will be placed on academic probation for a period of 60 days. During that time the student must secure a passing score or they will be withdrawn from the College until they comply with the rule.

WOW. Eeker Paul Quinn makes Hampton's (not so strict) dress code look like we were allowed to wear anything under the sun-- Laugh

Actually I think this may be a little TOO harsh and strict for college students. Its a college campus. What do you mean no jeans, gym shoes or sweatshirts or even SHIRTS WITHOUT COLLARS?? NO SHORTS....in Texas?? Now I agree with and understand- no do rags, baggy pants, profanity on clothes, rollers in the hair, hats inside etc in public such as Hampton. Most students don't have a problem with making these changes, but this is a little extreme. What do the students and alumni have to say about this??? I can imagine Paul Quinn is struggling with numbers- this is no way to increase them.

I like the overall concept, and I agree with no pajama bottoms, flip flops and halter tops, but overall its just too extreme. This dress code needs to be modified.

We are in full agreement. This guy took it to another level, which is extreme. I'm totally against pajamas, rollers in hair, underwear showing, hats in class, etc.....but no jeans or shorts, unless you have on School or Greek para??????

Makes NO sense! Business casual daily on a college campus???

Maybe it's just a question of survival. Maybe, just maybe, the Pres is trying to get the students to focus just on their studies. I'm not saying that I endorse the policy, but maybe he's thinking that hard times require hard measures. They're going to be on probation. Something has to be done. Do they want to wind up like Morris Brown?

It would appear to me he has adopted a buisness atmosphere for Paul Quinn. We want the black college sitting but want it in relationship to what is being done on most white college campus. We must remember our grads have to be twice as good in most cases to get an interview. Pride in dress cares over to pride in oneself and in ones school. Just as the college curriculum prepare our minds for professional success we need to also demonstrate those traits that carry over into professional life. Unfortuately, we don't have those black high schools with those black teachers who stressed pride, values and self-respect. We've seem to have lost that with integration. Our college students need to be brought back to reality. The School of Buisness and Industry at FAMU requires their students to be in buisness attair and perhaps that is one of the reason the cooperate 500 firms are beating down their door.
