HU's Osher Institute named 2007 model program
November 8, 2007

The Hampton University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute has been named the 2007 winner of the Association for Continuing Higher Education's Older Adult Model Program. This national award recognizes programs that provide outstanding learning opportunities and services to an older adult population.

University officials formally accepted the award Oct. 29 at the association's 69th Annual Conference and Meeting in Roanoke.

According to Kevin Marrow, director of the institute, this award offers the opportunity to showcase HU as a leader in continuing education to other universities throughout the nation.

"This award means a whole lot to Hampton's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as it will certainly enhance and improve the program," said Marrow.

Launched in 2005 through a $100,000 first-year operating grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, HU's institute offers intellectually stimulating learning opportunities for Hampton Roads citizens aged 55 and older.

The program's success has led to the registration of more than 300 participants and a wide variety of non-credit courses including computer classes, genealogical studies, ballroom dancing, creative writing and U.S. history.

HU has one of only four such institutes in Virginia, with George Mason University, University of Richmond and University of Virginia each hosting programs as well.

"Congratulations on your award. Your work reflects the high excellence to which all Association for Continuing Higher Education members aspire," wrote Dennis "Skip" Parks, association president, in a congratulatory letter.

The association is a network of diverse professionals who are dedicated to promoting excellence in continuing higher education and to sharing their expertise and experience with one another.

It evolved from the Association of University Evening Colleges, which began in 1939. «
