The Highest-Paid College Presidents Who Are African Americans
Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 12-21-06 A recent survey conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education finds that compensation paid to college and university presidents has increased dramatically in recent years. The survey states that the median compensation for a president of public universities is nearly $375,000. At private colleges and universities, many of which are quite small, the median compensation is under $300,000. But 10 percent of all private college and university presidents earn more than $500,000 a year. Where do African-American college presidents stand? Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was ranked as the fourth highest paid president of a large research university. Her annual compensation, which is buffeted by membership on the board of directors of several large corporations, was close to $1 million. Here we list the African-American college presidents included in the survey with the highest total compensation in 2005: ## Dr.Wayne Riley is the new president @ Meharry Medical College. ^^Agreed. A college President these days has to juggle so many responsibilities and be accountable to a number of people.

Freeman A. Hrabowski, III an Alumn of Hampton University
Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, has served as President of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since May, 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He serves as a consultant to the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and universities and school systems nationally. He also sits on several corporate and civic boards. Examples include the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Constellation Energy Group, the France-Merrick Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation (Chair), McCormick & Company, Inc., Mercantile Safe Deposit & Trust Company, and the Urban Institute. Examples of recent awards or honors include election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Philosophical Society; receiving the prestigious McGraw Prize in Education, the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, and the Columbia University Teachers College Medal for Distinguished Service; being named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Marylander of the Year by the editors of the Baltimore Sun; and being listed among Fast Company magazine’s first “Fast 50 Champions of Innovation” in business and technology. He also holds a number of honorary degrees, including most recently from Princeton University, Duke University, the University of Illinois, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Gallaudet University, Goucher College, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Binghamton University. Both books are used by universities, school systems, and community groups around the country. A child-leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Hrabowski was prominently featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, on the racially motivated bombing in 1963 of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Born in 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Hrabowski graduated at 19 from Hampton Institute with highest honors in mathematics. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he received his M.A. (mathematics) and four years later his Ph.D. (higher education administration/statistics) at age 24. Agree. They really do deserve every penny...and more...considering their achievements and the heavy responsibilities they shoulder.
Hampton's Harvey is a multi-millionnaire in his own right, and he and Mrs. Harvey "give back" quite generously to HU and the Virginia peninsula community:

Maybe now people will understand why we appreciate Dr Harvey and his family so much....also gives the community a reason to support the University's endeavors.... As a side bar the University also owns the Hilton hotel in Va Beach and the New Marriott in Newport News City Center... _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ O Hampton, we never can make thee a song Except as our lives do the singing,In service that will thy great spirit prolong, And send it through centuries ringing! |

Not to mention being charged with having to bring in millions of dollars for their respective institutions... _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |

I knew about the VA. Beach Hilton but the new Marriott in Newport News was news to me until now. Big NATIONAL HOTEL BREAKS GROUND AT CITY CENTER AT OYSTER POINT ON FEB. 24, 2005 $58 million Marriott Hotel and Conference Center to open summer of 2006 in Phase II of development NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – (Feb. 2005) – The Master Development Partners of City Center at Oyster Point–Newport News Town Center, LLC and the Economic Development Authority of Newport News– are pleased to announce that construction on the $58 million Marriott Hotel and Conference Center will begin on Feb. 24. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Langley Federal Credit Union building adjacent to the hotel site at City Center at Oyster Point. “We are pleased the Marriott Corporation has so enthusiastically given its vote of confidence to the Newport News market and to City Center at Oyster Point by franchising a first-class hotel and conference center here,” says Mayor Joe. S. Frank. The 11-story Marriott Hotel and Conference Center is being developed by Oyster Point Hotel Associates, LLC and the Economic Development Authority of the City of Newport News. Armada Hoffler will build the hotel, and Crestline Hotels and Resorts, Inc. will operate it. CMSS Architects, PC is the project architect, and financing is being provided by Hampton University and Bank of America. Plans call for 256 guest rooms and 23,000 square feet of meeting space. Amenities include concierge services, business center with secretarial services, wireless and high-speed internet, fitness center, indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool, restaurant and cocktail lounge. Meeting space in the conference center includes a 12,000 square-foot grand ballroom, a 4,400 square-foot junior ballroom, three 775 square-foot meeting rooms and a 1,000 square-foot boardroom. A 6,500 square-foot glass encased rotunda will offer elegant pre-function space. The Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, located minutes from the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and Interstate 64, is part of City Center at Oyster Point, a 53-acre development project by Newport News Town Center LLC, HL Development Services Group, NAI Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate and the Economic Development Authority for the City of Newport News. The $350 million master-planned development will include more than two million square feet of office, retail, residential and hospitality space. Phase I of City Center at Oyster Point is largely complete and comprises 320,000 square feet of Class A office and retail space and 360 apartments together valued at $90 million. More than 99% of the commercial space is leased and occupied. The four phases of the project are scheduled for completion over a ten-year period. “The project is on schedule and has grown considerably from original expectations,” says William Hudgins, president of HL Development Services Group. In 2000,the projected total investment was $250 million. Today, with the addition of residential housing and the fullservice hotel and conference center, total anticipated investment has grown by 30% to $350 million. Phase II and III of the development are being advanced concurrently and represent more than $230 million of planned development. “There are currently $140 million of construction projects underway at City Center and another $45 million of development in the pipeline,” adds Hudgins. “With the development now underway, City Center will achieve the critical mass that pulls the mixed uses together and forms that dynamic destination for the entire Peninsula. The Marriot Hotel and Conference Center is a center piece of this development.” ### This message has been edited.
