A new book aimed at young readers recounts the life of Indiana’s first black sheriff, who rose from school janitor, to teacher, coach and FBI agent before being elected Grant County’s sheriff.

The biography of Oatess Archey — ‘‘Going Over all the Hurdles’’ — was written by former Marion resident John A. Beineke, and is the fifth volume of the Indiana Historical Society youth biography series on prominent Hoosier citizens.
