Twins help make up largest class of FAMU pharmacy graduates

Graduation day emotional for everyone involved

Walking across the platform Sunday to receive their Florida A&M University diplomas was bittersweet for twins Erryn and Lauryn Dailey.

"Our mother wasn't there to see us," Erryn, 24, said.

Their mother, Charletta Dailey, passed away of cancer in 2003, around the same time the sisters were applying to attend FAMU's College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science.

"There was a Scripture she used to always quote, Romans 8:28, and it was, 'All things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to his purpose,'" Lauryn said. "When you were down or things weren't looking right, you'd always think about that, and it would help you through."

The twins, who grew up in Mobile, Ala., are ninth and 10th in a family with 11 children. Now that they've graduated, they plan to move to Tampa and work as pharmacists for a retail chain.

The twins were part of the largest graduating class from FAMU's College of Pharmacy, with 144 graduates. Including College of Law and masters degree students, nearly 1,400 people graduated in two ceremonies held at the Civic Center.

Willie Gary, a high-powered attorney who spoke at the 2 p.m. graduation, told students they must persevere through life's difficulties.

"There can be no progress without a struggle," said Gary, who has won several multi-million dollar cases. Although life for the graduates will not be easy, Gary said he's confident they will be successful.

"You're going to leave this place, and you're going to go out and you're going to make a difference."

Earlier in the day, Bishop Eddie Long, pastor of the 25,000-member New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga., used an African saying to make a similar point.

"Every morning in Africa, the fastest gazelle knows that it must outrun the fastest lion to stay alive," he said. "You better be running as fast as the wind, you better be learning, you still need to be working, you still need to be striving to make your life better and to make life better for those around you."

Graduation was a proud moment for Corliss Carroll, 44, whose younger daughter Nichole, 23, was graduating with a degree in psychology. Her older daughter had graduated from FAMU a year and a half earlier.

Misty-eyed with emotion, she said, "It's a pleasure to have two girls complete college when I didn't get to."
