Rochelle A. Young, a junior biology major at DSU, has been recognized among the top research poster presentations in the Molecular Biological Sciences category at the 2007 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) recently held in Austin, Texas.
Ms. Young was recognized for her research poster presentation entitled “Deficiency Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci for Fecundity Variation in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly).” The goal of the project was to identify genes that contribute to variations in fecundity – the number of eggs laid by females – using the fruit fly. She studied genes in a specific chromosome region, particularly analyzing the impact of genes in producing variations in egg production. Ms. Young’s detailed scientific research found that the genes in the region on which she focused were not responsible for variations in fecundity. More than 1,100 college students from across the nation gathered at the Nov. 7-10 ABRCMS and competed in 10 different science categories.  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _   |
