CNN reports on race from FAMU By Angeline J. Taylor • DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER • April 9, 2008 What does it mean to be black in America? That's the question scores of Florida A&M students answered Tuesday as part of a story being reported by CNN. A CNN correspondent, producer and others traveled to FAMU on Sunday as part of a multicity tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that includes North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Howard and Hampton universities. "It was interesting in talking with students at FAMU. They were not only aware of the history behind the school, but I think also very aware of their place in the world and had very well thought out ideas of what it meant to be black in America," said Chris Lawrence, a CNN correspondent from the Los Angeles bureau. The reports from FAMU also will be included in a special report produced by CNN in July. Lawrence said students' reactions were candid. The graffiti board messages ranged from "FAMU is the zenith of black college campuses," to "Circumstances that imprison us can not limit God's work through us." The CNN crew was introduced to FAMU by Student Government President Monique Gillum. Gillum displayed a desire to live up to the historical standards of FAMU, Lawrence said. "I don't know if you get that at every college and university in the country," he said. "She really felt that there was a history of people that came before her at Florida A&M and she had a standard to live up to and mediocrity wasn't a part of that standard." Lawrence said that feedback he received was a large part of the project. He said it was also important to share. CNN representatives were to come to FAMU and tell students "what CNN is all about." But to hear back from the students was also important. Student Government President-elect, Andrew Collins, also shared his take on being black in America. "I feel like being black in America means being presented with both obstacles and opportunities with your goals and your career paths," he said. History can still have lingering affects which present themselves like obstacles. Collins said it's still the obligation of black Americans to overcome those obstacles. As for opportunities he said, "At the same time the opportunities exist for us to move on to bigger and greater heights." On Tuesday, they network broadcast live at FAMU in the parking lot of the School of Business and Industry. By 7:30 a.m., a jumbo television was erected several feet in the air. Video kiosks were set up for students to share video responses. DJs were on hand along with: a text-messaging poll, graffiti message board and electronic polling stations. Then, FAMU's Marching 100 began to play. But their purpose for being there wasn't lost behind the lively camaraderie. CNN and the flock of students, faculty and staff were there to add to the spotlight on the black experience in America. Students at the seven colleges and universities were also asked to compete in a video contest where they answered specific questions. A winner will be named at each school. Then ultimately, those seven winners will compete with each other for a grand prize: a trip for two to the Essence Music Festival this summer in New Orleans. Jermaine Fletcher, 22, was FAMU's winner. He and the other winners will receive a digital video camera. "I was able to find not just one answer. Everybody — whether black or white — had a different response to furthermore show that people are different," Fletcher said. "I found being black to many people is a very diverse thing. It's a question that really digs in deep with how people identify with themselves." Lawrence said, "It was interesting for me to hear ... that these schools really empower us to go out into the world and interact with anyone. No matter who they are." _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |
