Hampton, VA - Environmental issues are concerns that remain in the foremost thought in the minds of many scientists, politicians and average American citizens. The 30th Annual Hampton University Conference on the Black Family's theme, "Environmental Issues Affecting the Black Family in the 21st Century & Beyond- The Black Family Conference Goes Green," will focus on the environment and the role of the black family in the age of going green. The conference, sponsored by the HU School of Science, will be held March 12-14.

Researchers are discovering the increasing negative effect humans are having on the environment. This year's conference will explore different methods the black family can use to live healthier and help save the planet at a local and global level.

The conference will begin with an opening reception on Wednesday, March 12. The sessions will begin on Thursday, March 13 and the topics will include: Hampton University Goes Green, Green Building/Architecture and Green Landscaping, and Environmental Problems that Affect the Health of African Americans.

This year the conference will be held concurrently with the School of Science's Annual Research Symposium on Friday, March 14. Students of all ages and their parents are invited to join sessions such as Historical Significance of Black Contributions to the Sciences and What We Can Do to Save the Planet. Conference goers are also invited to attend presentations from high school and college students during the Research Symposium.

In 1978, President William R. Harvey recognized the necessity of establishing consistent dialogue on health care, technology, business, handgun violence, income disparities and women's issues. As an outgrowth of the Black Family Institute, Harvey further committed the University's scholarly resources to finding solutions to the problems that affect African Americans and the minoritycommunity by initiating an annual Conference on the Black Family.

The Black Family Conference sessions are free and open to the public. The closing luncheon is $25 per person.
