I am as opposed to cultural banditry as the next person, but we bring a lot of this on ourselves.
It was the BCU band that performed this song as the opening to the EA Sports NCAA March Madness video game a few years back. It was Black folks who pitched and eventually got the movie Drumline made. We can't have it both ways. If you put something out to the mainstream, they are going to copy it. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Diamonds are forever pal, and so are the Hampton Pirates! I know it's BCU's fight song that is in discussion, but as someone pointed out since the movie drumline, we've seen more and more PWCU bands mimmick HBCU bandmanship. Tennessee Tech's drummers challenged the AOB's drummers. This is bound to be an after effect of Drumline.
I know other HBCU's play I'm So Glad, but I think more people associate that song with Tennessee State than any other program. Anyway, not only do other HBCU's still play it from time to time, but now the University of Memphis plays it. I couldn't believe it when I was watching a Memphis game on ESPNU and I heard them playing I'm So Glad in the stands. Then there's mTSU. In the late 90's they started playing several songs that HBCU bands are noted for playing. In particular Talking Out the Side of Your Neck. They also stole a couple of tunes that our tuba section plays. We figure that with their Black enrollment growing, that Black students who attended predominantly Black high schools are sharing what they've learned from the HBCU's with their PWCU bands. |
