Put it this way, none of the bands gave that WOW!! factor this year like they did last year...Some shows were good, some were puzzling, some were downright AWFUL...Every year since Honda started, each year the bands got better and better..Last year was the first time where I enjoyed every band and did not get bored..This year, overall, Honda regressed...TXSU got alot of applause because of their entrance and some of their dance routine but you take that away, their drilling was awful, they're sound was mediocre--alot of over playing...BCU was consistent, as usual, but underwhelming--meaining, they had a good show but nothing grabbed you and wouldn't let you go...Last years darling, Norfolk, had an excellent drill and sounded great but didn't wow you like last year...UAPB was mediocre, period...North Carolina Central was subpar, doing a show their own fans were ashamed of...Va. State was good, PERIOD!!!

Overall, Honda just wasn't up to par like last year or maybe even the two previous years but it was worth the $10 I paid to get in...

ok...Honda...

These are not in order by enjoyment or anything.

1. NCCU - I could have SWORN I was watching a DCI performance. They left ALL the black people home this time.
2. NSU - I done told yall about showin up without Staten - good job--not amazing, but good.
3. BCU - MAN that's a lot of people in that band. Enjoyed the excitement of your size and the "C" converting to "U"
4. TxSU - WHAT POWER!! Lot's of fun, but beyond the first 2 minutes, I left to watch NSU on the other side.
5. Albany - Atlanta LOVES some Albany. Decent performance.
6. Shaw U - LOVED the sound and the move away from the convention of show openings.
7. VSU - Did you REALLY have to blind us with those dancer uniforms like that? And florescent Orange makes regular Orange look dirty.
8. Tuskegee - I didn't actually hate yall this year.
9. WSSU - VERY IMPRESSIVE!! Well done!
10. UAPB - Very good.

Honda didn't have the feeling of WOW like it had last year. I mean, last year was on steroids or something. And it's hard for anybody to top what they did last year. And what's up with having Both MEAC schools perform to one side while both SWAC school performed to the other side...Got me walkin clean round dat building...lil. And how much current and past CIAA influence can you have in one show..

WSSU
NCCU
VSU
SHAW U
NSU

Good job and good picks, but comparitively it was bid lack luster.

NSU hasn't been in the MEAC in over 10 years. Why throw us in this group? Confused

Yea. I grew up with NSU in the CIAA. So I was more looking at it from a heritage point of view. I was proud to see so many bands who were current and past members of the CIAA represented at Honda. Especially since NSU has been one of the dominating programs within the MEAC for years now.

Dang I've never been so glad not have gone to an event in my life.

I decided not to go because they have not treated the media properly in my opinion. I've covered alot of events and by far the HBOB leaves me flat. They have us there for 4-5 hours and give us zilch to eat. How cheap.

Dang, you didn't shoot, either???? *smh*

Reggie wasn't there, either, and I had a seat up in Section 248 or something.

How was the crowd? The AJC photos made the crowd look a little sparse.

Hotlanta,
I was not ashamed of NCCU's show. It was great seeing a band do something different. Why do we as black people think that we all have to perform the same way all the time. What Central did was show some diversity in their program and I think it was great.

I agree when you say that Honda was not up to par this year. Maybe they need FAMU or Southern to be apart of this event. I still had a good time though.

IMHO the overall event was good but not great. I enjoyed portions of most of the shows for different reasons. Before I get to the highlights, these were the biggest low-lights:

1.Those buffons that came out during UAPB's dance routine trying to hype up the crowd; Mad
2. All of the announcers. They all talked way too much and many of them talked over their bands. Kind of like a bad radio DJ. Confused

Some of the highlights to me were:

Norfolk--excellent sound, the precision in their precision drills (they were so neat it look like someone drew them); and their performance of "Treat Her Like a Lady" Thumb Up

BCU--Everything was on point: the sound was great Thumb Up, the entrance was real niceEeker, great concert selection, no other band in the building could come anywhere close to matching the formations of Mrs. Mary and the sexy lady.

TxSU--Great Entrance, great energy and life throughout the show.

NCCU--I liked the sound and I liked the idea behind the Asian theme. I could really hear the positive effects of the sideline percussion instruments. You all went out of the box and I appreciate that.

Shaw--Nice show.

UAPB--Handicap Please send Jackson State next year.

I call it like it is..I sat NEXT to Central's alumni and they were in shock!!! Yeah, its good to go outside of the box but you have to also remember what your sudience is comprised of,primarily HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS...Thats the type of show to do at Battelfest, where a more mature crowd would appreciate it...

Any band that catered their show to high school students is foolish.Roll Eyes A university shouln't dumb down to high school students...they should set the standard. I appreciated Central' s show, but I'm more mature as you would call it. If I had a criticism of Central's show it was their lack of precision drills, not the overall show they presented.

I like bands displaying their own uniqueness. I can't stand that overblowing, let's have a cruck contest and forget we're muscians first mentality of too many HBCU bands.

I had a great seat and I enjoy e'rybody. I liked my own band the best, but that's to be expected.

I saw Brandmasta down there looking cute as ever. I love the hair. Wink

I liked those high kicking girls from I don't remember, but it was a nice move. Laugh

I loved NSU's sound. I hated the announcer. Let's kill him if he starts to talk thru your whole show again. K?

I hate the extra entertainment someone had. They were doing ducky until they injected that mess.

I didn't like the old people butt dance. WTH was that about? Take them out and whoever was down there did a fine job.

Nobody had on any see thru dance outfits, but that neon urnge blinded me til my eyeglasses adjusted.

Oh, and those dancers who actually did a Praise dance to the gospel song... Thumb Up The group right beside them obviously did NOT get the memo. Uh, there's some things you just ought not do during a gospel song.

I LOVED PVAM unis. That black and gold was so pretty. That was my favorite uniform.

Why did NCCU play a modified Let's Go? Even the rattler standing out by the concession stand with me noticed it. We looked at each other like WTH? Laugh

I'm not sure if anyone could top last year, which to me was the best Honda to date, but there's still next year. Smiler

^^^^^SEEEEE All this time I kept saying NCCU's riff sounds like "Let's Go" and people made me think I was crazy. As much as I play that dang on song on my Ipod at the gym, I KNOW "LET'S GO" when I hear it!

You're right about the Lets Go riff, a group by me said the same thing...As far as NCCU's show, I followed it but you have to remember who your audience is...You do not have to "dumb" your show down to appease the masses..What you do is make it clearer by more visuals or more commentary...I went to a PWC that is big on DCI type shows...What the announcer does is produce a clear and precise explanation throughout the show, without bein intrusive...It works because young and old, black & white love their shows...Central's show was good but just needed a little more clearness of what was going on...
