Football team collects rings, other awards

Kareem Copeland
kareemcopeland@clarionledger.com

The Jackson State football team held a private ceremony to celebrate the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship inside the Athletics and Assembly Center on Thursday.

"I think we're just starting to turn the corner," coach Rick Comegy said during his speech. "... No doubt we can go to the I-AA playoffs and compete with the Appalachian States. That's what we want to do."

The Tigers collected their championship rings and presented one to legendary former coach W.C. Gorden.

Receiver Jaymar Johnson was named MVP after catching 36 balls for 613 yards and seven touchdowns.

Kicker Eric Perri was tabbed as the best offensive player after ranking No. 10 in the nation with 1.42 field goals per game.

Defensive tackle Cory Clark earned the title of best defensive player with 55 tackles, 5 sacks and a team-high 17 1/2 tackles for loss.

LInebacker John Thompson won the Academic Award, majoring in business administration with a 3.5 grade point average.

Receiver Terence Jones and linebacker Malcolm Palmer shared the Unsung Hero Award.

All-conference

JSU placed two players on the All-SWAC softball first team.

Sophomore pitcher Jessica Villegas earned the honor by striking out 120 batters and posting a 3.79 ERA.

Sophomore shortstop Amanda Boggan joined her teammate by hitting .365, carrying a .448 slugging percentage with an .883 fielding percentage.

Academic honor

Twenty-one student athletes were accepted in the Chi Alpha Sigma National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society. Inductees are required to letter in their sports and hold a minimum 3.4 gpa.

Comegy's got to be kidding about challenging APP State! He can't be us (The Tennessee State University) or a division II school known as Delta State. Shooooot he better keep playing Paul Quinn because JSU AIN'T ready for the playoffs!

Isn't it even MORE blasphemous for a MEAC pawn to dare look down on a conference whose sent TWICE as many players to the NFL and has TWICE the tradition of a faceless conference?! What's the MEAC known for....?! You got it....NOTHING!!! Laugh

^ You are on crack. Grambling and TSU fight for the top spot. Everyone else is fighting to be mentioned with the two. That's just being real.

I do believe you have the best coach in BCF. Not the best program.

Jackson State can compete with the Appalachian States of the world. They have the talent, and so do the HBCU's. It's all about belief, intensity, and execution. If you don't see it before you see it, you'll never see it. There is no reason why a school that has sent more pros to the NFL in 1-AA can't win a National Title. There is no reason why a conference that has sent more pros to the NFL can't win a SINGLE playoff game.

We need to stop being scurred and get it done.

Don't hurt him Doc, tsutiger is a tad bit delusional. If I had lost to a team the last six times, and the last 17 out of 20, I would be delusional, and hate them too.

Exactly. This guy has never coached a playoff game in his life and now he feels like JSU can compete with App State. Get real!

You wanna talk big, have your AD call up to Boone and schedule a game. App State is always looking for games because people are scared to play them. And when that game is scheduled, then I'll believe you ready
