Miss Hampton University charged with shoplifting

HAMPTON -- Police say Miss Hampton University Javicia Walker shoplifted from an area store.

On April 19th, police officers say Javicia Walker shoplifted some items from an area Target. The charges against the business management major from Maryland first showed up in The Script, Hampton University's newspaper.

"I talked to her about it," said junior Rachel Spivey. "She says it wasn't true, so I don't know what happened, and how these rumors started, but I believe her."

Walker was crowned on September 28th, 2007, and is set to compete in the Miss Virginia pageant, the feeder into the Miss America pageant in late June.

On the day she was crowned, the outgoing Miss Hampton University, Rasheeda Waddell, had some words of advice for the junior, "I encourage her to make this year her own, because she's going to feel pressured to uphold the standards of being Miss Hampton.

Wednesday around campus, there were mixed feelings about Walker upholding the standards of the crown and the school.

"It puts a blemish on the school's name," said senior Ellaway Amiker. "She's a real good girl, but that's just an unacceptable act."

"It's bad," said Hampton University alum Joey Drayton. "But, everybody makes mistakes. So, I'm pretty sure she's learning from her mistakes."

Among Hampton students, there was a belief that Walker should get to keep her title and her chance to become Miss Virginia, but there was also the wondering of whether Walker's poise cracked just a little under the pressure of her duties.

"It's hard to believe that someone of that good character could do something like that," said Amiker.

Police say Walker was released from the store on a summons. She faces one count of larceny shoplifting.

Sometimes good people do stupid things. She should apologize and submit her resignation immediately.

She has just messed up her reputation.

I'm not defending her, and I know you love to talk trash about HU, but that would be a new low even for you.

WOW, while this act is embarassing to herself and the Miss HU crown, I'm actually just as appalled and disappointed that this was posted on the sports zone , and my fellow MEACfans have entertained this post on this forum, and the mods haven't moved it.

to NSUalum for making sure to post this on the most inappropriate forum. Typical I suppose- but still no excuse. No one posts the articles of the shameful acts of the NSU students up here (or other schools for that matter unless it pertains to athletics). Now that it has been thoroughly viewed & discussed, I respectfully request the moderators go ahead and move this OUT of the sports zone.

I blame this on the sluggish economy - it's even got campus queens struggling. If she needs some money, I'm sure there are some Tidewater shake joints that would be glad to employ her - she'd make money, hand over fist

I have to admit-- thats true, and funny not the ordeal but the comment. Trust, there are other schools in the Tidewater whose students having been taking advantage of that for years.

I don't believe your fellow alum put this on the sports board, but s/he certainly did. NSUalum should be shamed I don't even think the majority of spartans would stoop this low.......but then again, quite a few are commenting on here.

No excuse but, even our brightest kids do stupid things. Non-issue, nothing the young lady can't put behind her.

On the other hand, if she was pilfering duct tape....
